On the Teach Me Guitar s/w, Ross Boton talks baout the "Steady Shuffle pattern." I don't quite get it.

Is it down-up-down-down?

Not sure about what's in the book you have, here's what "Country Back-Up Guitar" has to say about the Moderate shuffle beat strum.

Play broad down and up strokes with your flatpick, hitting at least four or five strings with each stroke.
The first down-stroke is the loudest and it should be on the bottom strings (6, 5,4 and 3 ideally).
The other strokes should hit the top four strings (4,3,2and 1).
you don't have to be accurate about which strings you hit. Keep your wrist loose and get into a relaxed easy groove.

down....down..up...down....up...down...up
1......&..2.......&.....3.........&....4.........&

Again this may not be anything like what your book has.
