can anybody play this at 8th notes, AP picking, at 270 bpm? Is it possible? I've only got it around 200-205, and thats a killer.

Is 8th notes at 270 bpm the same than 16th notes at 135 bpm? if so, it aint that fast, just keep on praticing.

I don't know, I know that its fast jazz, 135 = half note. I'm not a shredder, so speed isn't something I really focus on, but it has become something that I have developed quite a bit over the year, but I think accuracy comes first.

Just another question: when you guys learn longish licks, and you want to get them quite fast, do you memorize them as best you can so you aren't impeded by reading tab?

As for the question in your first post..that's pretty fast for me. But certainly possible. The picking pattern seems a little awkward too, but I haven't really tried it.

Hi

16th notes on 135 bpm is the same as 8th notes on 270 bpm. If you want to learn big phrases I would suggest to split this long lick into little parts and play the first part clean and memorize it. Then take the next part and go on like this. then play all parts together and bring 'em up to speed. Hope that helps :)

Very interesting lick... I got it to the same speed as you, although my general speed is much faster. 2 Problems with speeding up this particular lick:

1) It's swing eighths, not straight. I've never seen any shredder play swing eighths/sixteenths at light speed.

2) The lick is very difficult MENTALLY, because it involves a scalar run with a chromatic run, and it has a complicated picking patterns. I'm sure that when you nail the lick in your fingers at slow speed, you'll have no problem speeding it up, because it's only difficult for your mind.

At this speed, it becomes straight 8ths as opposed to swing eights. Listen to Oleo on Pat Martino - Live at Yoshi's, if you listen to his licks, he doesn't swing it very much because he plays quite fast. I now have it memorized pretty well, now I'm just trying to get it up, its just a little frustrating.

Well, I've gotten it at a rough 135/270 16th/8th speed, but I'm not picking every note crystal clear. Unfortunately I'm a little late to post, but I'll still tell you what I think (which will repeat a bit of what's already been said.)

First off, I would take small sections and memorize them quick (sections as small as maybe four notes at a time..) Then try to get it to where you can play that fast burst of speed at the tempo you want. Of course, when you try to connect all the sections, it's not going to all play fast like that, but it's a good start I think. Then, after memorizing the whole lick like that, just start over playing the whole thing at once... Over.. and over... and over. You can get it pretty fast with good practice and a day or two. Always remember to take a break from it too. I'm not sure why it helps, maybe it gives your brain some time to process the information, but I started Thursday, took a day off Friday, and now I can do it relatively well..

Anyway, hope that helped even if it was a bit redundant (I have to get my say in the matter ;) ) Later.

Now, I'm not very sure ho the tempo is set on this I've seen people post different things about the tempo. 135 = half-note is QUITE fast. One of the fastest jazz zongs I've seen. It's relatively faster than let's say 135 = quarter-note. So what is the exact tempo in relation to 8th notes.

I have a HIGHLY reputatable standard notation transcription, it is 1/2 note = 135.
