I thought that 'open', used in the context of guitar chords, only referred to chords that made use of open (not fretted) strings--and that 'closed' meant up on the neck :D.
I have here a defintion that open chords span an octave, closed are within an octave. Is this the correct general definition?

OPEN CHORD one played in open position.
CLOSE VOICE TRIAD 1 3 5
OPEN VOICE TRIAD 1 _ 5 _ 3
In this case you are skipping the first third and 2nd root.
This is only one of many possible open voice triads.
Close voice means the voices are as close together as possible, open voice means they are not. There are only three inversion of a close voice triad 135,351,513. Open voice triads have an infinite number of possible inversions. The three closest are 1_5_3, 5_3_1, 3_1_5.
