learning new styles

just wondering if any folk here have problems in adjusting to playing new styles. my guitar roots are fingerstyle on steel string acoustics and flamenco. at the moment I'm trying to get to grips with jazz, bluegrass and shred and am having to relearn a lot of stuff such as crosspicking, coping with heavier guage strings, tapping etc. Im finding it's not as easy as I thought it might be. fr' instance Im too used to playing arpeggios with my fingers and am finding it quite tricky playing arpeggios using alternate picking.

Both Jeff Beck and Martin Taylor play with their fingers, so if you already soar with your fingers there may be no reason to use a pick in order to explore new styles.
