Hey, its me again.
The last 2 months or so, when ive really started working on my technique. The one thing that always annoys/hinders me is my picking hand (ok, not the one thing :D )
Anyway, I'll try describe how i hold the pick. It is held between the index finger and the thumb, on the side of my index finger. The index finger is curled quite a bit, so when i put my thumb straight out over the pick, the hole between the two fingers looks a bit like a D, or a semi-circle.
The only problem with this is it feels weird, the pick often slips and i dont feel like i have enough/much control. I have looked at pictures of EricV's right hand (posted in a old thread by Carvinite, and tried to imitate it and found it very weird- the pick was on a large angle from the string and i couldnt get a clean sound out of it. I have also been looking at Paul Gilberts style, by watching Intense Rock II. There isnt a closeup of his hand, but his picking is so fluid, which is ideally how i want mine (as fluid as his)
The other thing with my picking hand is it is everywhere. Sometimes its completely floating, sometimes its resting on the strings, sometimes its on the bridge. I think this is making me lose speed and accuracy, any suggestions?
The last thing is where the motion is coming from. It mainly comes from the wrist when i play slow, but when I speed up, the forearm stiffens, and i pick from the arm/elbow. I have trouble picking at high speeds from the wrist, and need suggestions to relax the arm and use the wrist effectively.
Long Post, sorry guys. I would very grateful for suggestions to the above things, and also grateful to either photos of your/others picking hands, or people like Paul Gilbert's.
Thanks,
Dave
