After years of playing, I think its sad that people think there are no girls who can play more than a few greenday songs on guitar these days. Being a female guitarist, its a lot harder for us to get any recognition at all, unless we can shred like petrucci and blow your socks off. Even then, we're nothing special, just 'ok' or 'not bad'. There are so many decent girl guitarist out there now, especially ones I know. Just gve us a chance.

Sorry, I'm ranting now.

So guys, girls shred too, and we do it pretty bloody well too.

Hey there,

I always thought that girls could shred, i don't think it even makes a difference, and having girly fingers myself, i think it might be easier for girls than for men with big and chubby fingers. But i agree on the fact that not a lot of women guitarist gets a lot of recognition. Perhaps you could name some good women guitarist that i could check out! I would be very interested.

Even sometimes, i just wish that they were more women playing guitar and other instruments around my town so i could form a band with only girls in it :P grrr, i would be happy! No but seriously, i have a tendency to think that maybe girls have a different approach on guitar then we do and it can be mostly interesting and educative to know each other better.

yeah sure girls can.If they want to and like to i.e. most girls don't like shredinng stuff. They are "girlish",got me that's why they are called "girls".Only minority in this stuff so people don't say that girls shred, like people don't say boys do ballet dance. :p

I walked into my local music store with my mother, and on seeing that all the clientelle were male after waiting in line, she whispered: You can just smell the testosterone. We both got a good laugh.

I guess that sort of thing could be intimidating for women...who knows..

My cousin plays in a girls-only-band. They have been recognized as one of the better young bands in their part of the country, but they haven't been practicing a lot lately.

Is it me or is this sexism?
Come on!!!! You think you're still living in the '50s? No need for that woman emancipation thing in here. I never said girls couldn't shred so I am semi-offended by this thread. I'm ok either it's a boy or a girl(or neither tbh)(I do prefer girls, Imho :D)...if they're cool, I'm cool...

Either way...welcome and happy thread shredding (bad joke :S)

Man, I know it sucks girls don't get the recognition they deserve but they do shred (there are not many famous girl shredders... but if you think about it there are not many famous guy shredders either)and I do have respect for girls... all my macho thoughts went away when once in a martial art class I got my butt kicked by this real pretty girl (hey she was a belt higher up than me :p )so yeah, you girls can do lots of things that some guys say are just "a guy thing" and I am sure you are a much more competent mechanic than myself (even if you have no idea of how a car engine works you've GOT to be better than me :D ) . So you've got our support here at IBM, we may be a male dominated site (and that's just 'cause the webmaster is a guy :D ) but we do welcome girls and as far as I'm concerned, a musician is a musician and wether is a he or a she deserves the same respect and consideration as all members here at ibreathe.

With that being said. Have a warm welcome to ibreathemusic comunity and feel free to ask for advice or share any new approaches/technical breakthroughs you've found on your way.

Hope you enjoy your stay.

Regards,

Rizla

Watching girls play guitar is quite a turn on

I think it's not only a question about shredding ...
Also in the other fields of guitar playing women get less recognition.
Anybody of you ever heard of Emily Remler ?

She was (unfortunately she died at a very young age) a great jazz guitarist.
She had a beautiful tone, great timing, taste and chops !
I don't know why she never became as famous as she would have deserved ....
It's such a pity that only very little information about her can be found on the internet ...
If you can find any of her recordings, get them !!!

Lars

hey, i wasn't being sexist at all, I was just making a point. I play in a band full of guys and the sort of stuff we play in remotely girly in the least. We're pretty proggy, started of playing some DT, LTE type stuff before fusing it with our own artistic ideas and now we have a pretty unique sound, and are very different from other bands around at the minute. I've never been into 'girly' rock; i started playing guitar at 7 and my teacher (who was fantastic) let me hear DT then and I was just hooked, and thankfully it has made me a much better musician as I have a greater appreciation for music outside the basic predictable arrangements. They never inspired my interest, I've always needed something which will, ahem (scuse the cliché) take me on a journey, keep me hanging on every note, and explores every inch of musical capability. I'm sick of hearing commercial, "hit" songs following the old formula of verse to choruses rather quickly, another verse and chorus, a bridge, a solo, and finally another chorus or two follows it. This stenciled approach to writing leaves little to the imagination and it bores me. Maybe this is because I was introduced to the 'art' of wonderfully innovative songwriting at such an early age. Either way, I'm glad I was.

As for guitarists to check out, I'd say have a look at Jennifer Batten, I went to one of her seminars and was blown away. Saw her outdo Jeff Beck. Dena Turk of Promises, Dana Duffy Ex-Mythic/Demonic Christ, Jill Sharpe, Blues Guitarist from LA. Mama Paula is awesome too. There are too many to mention.

Girls can shred too? OF COURSE! I´ve known this since 1989 when I saw Phantom Blue live...those girls ripped AND looked great!

Anyone remember Girlschool BTW? They didn´t exactly shred but they ROCKED!

Oh believe me, there are definitely some incredible girl guitarists. Out of all the local bands here, the best one has a female lead guitarist and she is by far superior to all of the other guy guitarists.

I agree with who ever said watching girls play guitar is a turn on :D .

I wish their were MORE girl guitar players.

I think guys who think playing technical music is a guys only thing are just scared that they are gonna get their asses handed to them by a girl.

One of the best classical guitarists in the world is female. I can't remember her name tho... She did some stuff with Steve Morse.

A lot of those kid violin virtuoso's are girls. If they can shred on a violin, you know they could shred on a guitar if they wanted to! :)

I'm fairly certain at least one of my daughter's will be a shred demon! ;)

My daughter will be an inferno-spreading, fiendish drummer from the depths of the evil dungeons..Argh

Either way...6 degrees...welcome...I think we here at IBM are not sexist and are also not into the crappy regular pop-stuff(I'm not tbfh)...enjoy your stay....anything I can help with feel free to ask away, but I'm sure you know more about music than I do...Oh..and happy B-Day... :D cheers

aaw.. ta very much. Hasn't been a great day as I have just been made redundant from Marks & Spencer. On the other hand I have a degree, a massive cake, and a whole night to go and get wasted. Hopefully things will turn around.

Who knows, maybe a record deal is just around the corner.....

Of course girls can shred too. Anyone who truly believes there to be a strong divide between girls and boys in ability is truly archaic. However, I noticed someone said something about girls having fingers that are longer or thinner, and that manly fingers are more big and stubby. Well in my opinion perfect man hands or fingers would be like Paul Gilberts: immensly long fingers, huge hands, thin fingers, long and thin finger tips, that is surely perfect for playing guitar or any other activity for that matter, unfortunately i did not inherit such fingers, but it makes a lot of difference, especially when playing high, where the frets are small. So agreed, if anything girls have that as an advantage. Except girls that have really small hands and small chubby fingers, thats just unfortunate. 'The Great Kat' whoever she is, is apparently a very good shredder, as is Jennifer Batten, It think who uses 8 finger tapping as well, or so I've heard. Then women like Bonnie Rait (Spelling?) play with feeling. Its just by chance IMO that men get more recognition because more men are inclined to play guitar than women, thats not sexist, but a fact. Shred away. Why do you care what other people think? People listen to rap and that hyper-derivative quasi"""rock""" made by people who can't even strum three chords. They call anybody who knows box 1 of the pentatonic minor scale a "wanker". I couldn't possibly care less. It's a source of vague amusement, nothin more.

I totally agree. Girls can be just as good as guys at guitar. For instance look at Jennifer Batten. This girl is awesome. This girl can tap and probably tap better than me...lol.

Yeah, she plays for this all girl band. I can't remember her name but I think that Mike Portnoy also married the drummer of the band if I'm not mistaken. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They play in My Ruin, and they are both excellent. DT are to blame for them splitting up for a while, lol.

They USED to be in a band called Meansreak, with one album under their belts. I believe John Myung's wife was also a member. That was a long time ago; I'm doubtful that they still play together.
