I know the basics of tapping, and while not fast, it's all even in time and volume.

But I don't "do" much, I either choose a scale on one string and randomly tap notes, or do the same with two strings (Though I would be slower).

What's next? I know there's a lot more, like including arrpegios, or tapping in runs and solos (Like Michael Romeo and Greg Howe), but I want to focus on pure technique now, then go to speed later, those techniques are a bit too advanced for me.

You can always look up some more simple tapping, yet fast you can get it up to speed pretty easy if you practice it. Eddie Van Halens "Eruption" At the end has a nice tapping bit, wast the first one i learned. Also since your just learning tapping another thing to learn that im having to re-learn is the postion of the notes your tapping. For example: ()=right hand tap

Most tapping is like this or similar
--(12)----5----9-----(12)----5-----9-----(12)---5-----9 ect..... right?

Well to mix it up some and make it sound different then you can do it this way. This is the way Mich Angelo Batio uses in Speed Kills studio version at the end

---(12)---5----9-----(12)----9-----5------(12)-----------------

I attached a sound file but on the file im playing 17---12----15 and using those two types. When you hammering on from the 9th to 12th you just leave your finger there till you pull-off the 12. Basically the finger tapping the 9 is moving half as fast as your right hand tapping finger. I still have trouble with the timing at fast speeds. I actually got frustrated once with eruption and just started hammering down on the fret with my right hand as fast as possible and it sounded pretty good if you keep it steady and dont run outa energy, lol. Of course i had to practice a long time to get it accurate cause when i usually tap with my right hand and not too awful fast my other fingers seem to always anchor on the sides of my guitar neck e.e. If your interested in more tapping i have made up some of my own stuff and can put it on here if you like.

Oh, also another technique thats still only 3 fingers but 4 note tapping

--(12)---0----2---3---(12)---0----2----3------

A tapping bit i made up follows this pattern (do each lick 4x) (|) marks one pattern

--(12)---0----2---3|----(12)--0---3----5|---(12)---5----8|

--(12)---0----5---7|

Sounds pretty cool with distortion really fast.
I think i saw satch do a tapping thing that does the 12 0 2 3 and so i just used that and made up something. If your not gonna get REALLY into tapping those are about the main techniques used. There are plenty more using more fingers on your right hand or changing positions and direction of playing, just depends on how far into it you wanna go.

you might try to slide with your tapping finger, or do the thrill tapping with the pick like satriani or tap the note with your tap-hand finger and bend the tapped string with your fret-hand finger... something like

G||--4---9-----------(4)---------------\ 2----b r t b(left hand) po (and hold b) r

Sorry for the quality... i'm neither a good tabber nor keen on recording business.

I would also suggest you to take your "old" tapping exercises and try to execute them with a different tapping finger... maybe one day you would like to try 2 or 3 (or even 4) tapping fingers things (like S. Lynch's or J. Batten's stuff) and this way you are going to develop the accuracy on the other fingers.

Check out "midnight" and "New rays from an ancient sun" by joe satriani, those are both self contained tapping pieces a little more interesting than the standard eruption style single string stuff.
