U can actually make it as loud as the other notes u play. What helps to make it louder is two things
1)make sure you tap hard with your pick or finger
2)after u tap kinda pull your pick down like you're picking the note quickly after the tap...hope u understand that poor explanation :D

tapping with a clean sound is much more difficult to sound defined than tapping with a distorted sound, basically it will just require you to tap harder.
try learning a song like "day at the beach" by satch to get a feel for what you need to do.

It may be normal depending on what pickup your using, how the knobs are you guitar/amp are set, etc. Otherwise, you could be A) Not tapping the string hard enough with your finger or B) playing on dead strings or C) simply playing on a part of the fretboard that isnt as condusive to tapping (i.e. - when playing with a clean tone you'll get a loud note from a tap much easier if it's the 2nd fret on the A string vs the 20th fret on the G string).
Are you just try to tap from one note to another? Or are you trying to trill between two different notes and just not pulling off correctly?

Yeah, I'm not that suprised that it'd be a little quiet with the distortion turned off. If it isnt loud enough for your tastes, make sure you're hitting the string hard enough and pulling off slightly to the side of the string (downward toward the floor if you were standing). Oh.. and turn the distortion on!

One thing to note.... the tapped notes will sound louder once the callous on your tapping finger gets nice and hard.
Wait, make that two things!! Isn't there an article on tapping somewhere? Maybe by Eric Vandenberg... ;)
The "One" solo is cool. I used to play that tune when it first came out. All my students wanted to learn how to play it...
