But we have to admit it: 4 nps patterns are for the physically gifted guitarists. In my case, I have small-sized hands and it's quite hard for me to play in that 4 notes per string fashion all the time without having my left hand go sore, since most of the single string patterns require difficult stretches.--- David Bohorquez (author of the article)

I like the article and its idea of combining the two main pattern types. I disagree with his statement that 4nps patterns are for physically gifted guitarists. If the stretching gets too hard for the left hand to do, slide it.
In the attachment, if you can't play |-5-7-9-10-| on the low E using this finger pattern |-1-2-3-4-|, try this technique that I learned from the Greg Howe video. play the finger pattern|-1-1-3-4-|. don't do a legato slide or anything like that,

1)put finger 1 on fret 5 & strike the note
2)quickly move finger 1 to fret 7 (no audible slide)
3)strike note
(the goal is to have it sound like a normal scale.)
on the way down, slide with the first finger, but move it the other way.
I tried to make this as clear as possible. If you are still unsure what I mean, buy Greg's "Hot Rock Licks" video by REH:D. (you'll learn a ton of other stuff from it, too) Greg Howe deserves alot of credit, respect, and awe for what he has done for guitar playing!

Listen to anything by Malmsteen and you'll find the sliding thing in it.

He does this all over his music.
