In regards to gaining "perfect pitch"...
I've found it quite beneficial to pull from your memory(if you can) a piece of music you're familiar with. Let's say the first chord from Zeppelin's "Good Times, Bad Times". It's an E. From my experience, I'm able to pull intervals from there and mentally "hear" any note I choose.
Another good one is the intro from Sabbath's "Paranoid". The first two notes are ~D to E. This gives you a whole step interval to start with.
