Ha ha. Got your attention didn't I? Ok, i'm really not. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the settings he used on the dokken albums, primarily "under lock and key". Back in the day when that album came out, GFTPM used to feature artists gear and settings on their songs. They would show the amp, pedal and even all the other outboard gear settings they used. Can anyone point me in that direction? Thanks

Hey eric, i dont suppose u have any idea of PG's tone settings i looked everywhere and could find them, i was kinda wandering wat treble mid and bass and level distortion he uses, someone said he uses a pedal for distortion and someone said he uses his amp distortion. I especially like that tone he had on the intense rock I video and u know on live extreme vol. 1, the solo on that has great sound. Thanks in advance if u do know.

In the Intense Rock video and on Extreme Volume 1 he used the Ada Mp1 tube preamp. Itīs the same rig you see in the gear section of IR 1. ( And EV 1 is the only Racer X album he uses the ADA on as his main amp )
I canīt tell you any exact setting, but Iīd recommend to turn highs and trebles way up, maybe the bass too.
He didnt use a distortion pedal in the video or on the album AFAIk. The MP1 had plenty of gain adn was MIDI controllable, so he could control everything easily.
The pickups in that pink Ibanez were a Seymour Duncan soapbar pickup in the neck position and either an SD or Dimarzio in the bridge position.
Sorry that I cant give you exact setting
Hope this helps anyway

thanks a lot eric u gave a lot of good info. his tone is probably partly his clean playing but even when i play well (slower) i get a real muddy sound some time. Im just wandering how much difference getting di marzio/duncan pickups will make im working full time now so i can afford to get them, but im guessing id need someone to change them. I have a prestiege rg1570 ( :D ) that has ibanez pickups on, i think they r ok but havnt put them through a good amp yet. I use treb 10, mid 5, bass 3 for some reason ill try cranking up the bass. As for the amp, welll my budget is Ģ200-300 from parents for xmas or $500-600, i guess if it'd make a lot of difrence and as i may be gigin soon hopefully i cud add my funds to that to get a realy good amp. Curse my ignorance, but is ada an amp company caus i dont know them. I always thought that PG used Laney (sorry, u must be frustated with my stupidity of knowledge of setting up things). It just really sucjs when i go into a music shop and there only interested in selling me the new marshall or something, saying its the best. Cheers for the advice.

Hi there

The pickups can make a lot of difference, but setting up the EQ to a similar sound Paul has and picking HARD ( essential aspect of his sound ) are even more essential things if you wanna get a similar sound.
ADA is out of business, but you can still find MP1s ( those are tube preamps, you will need a poweramp to amplify it, or a good speaker emulator if you wanna plug it into a mixing desk or computer ) on Ebay or at pawnshops occasionally.
These days, Paul certainly uses Laneys. The MP1 was mainly used on the IR1 video and EV1, he used modded Marshalls and Metaltronix amps on the other Racer X and early Mr. Big albums.
As I said, the pickups do make a difference ( Paul prefers Tone Zone and Super Distortion pickups, occasionally using a PAF Pro and Humbucker From Hell as well ), but the amp settings and very accurate and precise technique with hard picking are even more integral parts of his sound

Thanks a lot eric, the advice is greatly appreciated. i think that after i earn a bit of money i may shell out a bit to get some decent pickups, as for the amp i may stick to the laney im lookin cause of a budget. I try to focus on picking hard and im really slowing down to correct my technique and over the summer i adopted the floated hand which helped a bunch and i only tried caus ur articles suggested so, which is working great ;) . I also only got into PG through reading of him in ur articles. Im gonna fiddle my EQ settings a little, and i will go for some new pick ups after Xmas maybe. Its hard work just the technique but too pick loudly enough as well is super hard work. Thanks again, and i'll let you all know after xmas how i've got on with the new amp and some practise, and hopefully some new pickups! Thanks again.Sean
