Hi everyone.
I have some difficulties with noise when playing certain skip patterns. Most of the time I have it under control with 2 handed muting etc but this one pattern in paticular is really annoying me!
e----------9----9-12-9---9-----
b-------------------------------
g-12-9-12---12--------12--12-9
The noise occurs when I take my pinky of the 12 fret on G to play the 12 fret on the E string.
Any advice would be more than welcome!!

nice little diminished riff.;)
Are you doing it on electric or acoustic and do you have real low action?

Doing it electric, with medium action. It almost seems that my pinky kinda sticks to the string and lift it up when I take my pinky off it. Most of the time I can mute everything with a combo of my fretting and picking hand but here it doesn't really do the trick!
I just noticed that it seems that on the G string the noise is far worse than all the others!

Well practice is the best answer but having low action really makes it easier. See if you can have your action lowered without any fret buzz and your pinky will not stick as much.

Thanks for the tip, but I've seen pieces by players with higher action than mine doing crazy string skipping. Perhaps there is someone with some other advice than changing my setup? Maybe I should put magnesium powder on my pinky before playing :D.

Hi,
I have the same problem when releasing a finger, but not only when string skipping and not only on the pinky and it gets really annoying. Most of the times I release the last finger from a string the pure losing contact of the string (after it is fretted, so using less pressure wont help) is letting it ring. I tried it really slow and very accurate, but still the problem wont go away. I'm trying to release the finger very vertical which helps a bit but still doesn't solve the problem.
Maybe my fingers are too sticky? .oO(Strange thing is, it occurs since I was bit by this radioactive spider ;-))
Any help appreciated,

You could try keeping your 3rd finger on the string, not fretted, but enough to mute it. When you release your pinky, the string won't ring, the most you'll hear will be a duff sound, but certainly not ringing...
Look at the code... the part where the * is: keep you 2nd and 3rd finger on the g string

Hm that seems quite effective! Its going to take me some practise to get that kind of independence, but thats what we are all here for isn't it :).
Thanks a lot Reinerk I'm gonna try it out.

yep, i think proper muting is the way to go here.
different possibilities:
1) palm mute the g string at that time, or
2) like reinierk said let your finger rest upon the string, or
3) so hybrid picking and let the pick rest upon the g-string while one of the other three righthand fingers plucks the high e string.
a combination of all three will be the best i assume.
