I saw velvet revolver last night on the late show, and I noticed when slash plays it looks like he barely moves his fingers! They're all always so close to the fretboard its crazy. My question is, is this something that will come naturally to me, or is it somehting i should work on, because the finger im not using to fret are always up off the fret board especially my pinky.
AND if its somehting i need to work on, how do i work on it? http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

I personally think it all depends on the player. I play with my fingers reletively close to the fretboard.
If you want, it might improve your playing time by a few seconds because your fingers don't have as far to travel, work on it by slowing down your playing and paying attention to making sure that your fingers are close to the fretboard, and eventuallly build up speed.

Hey wiechfreak working on it or not is up to you, although I do think it`s a good idea. Check out the following article by Eric which explains supportive fingering which helps you keep your fingers close to the board.

hope this helps,

Yeah, I think that it's something that you should work on, just that it isn't that important, so you shouldn't put it on top of your "To Do" list.

In my oppinion I think you will eventually naturally come up with a method that works best for YOU. Some guys are insanely fast without moving their fingers much, some guys are insanely fast with moving their fingers a lot, sometime even what seems like too much. Doesn't really matter as long as it works for you. There are guys out there that are faster then you or I will ever be that have technique that even the most amateur of guitarist could find fault in. You might want to think about it every once in a while to keep your mind interested if you find yourself drifting off as you run up and down scales, but nothing more then that.

I think you probably are in need of a good live teacher/mentor to give you some direction and structure. Frank Zappa also gave good advice when he said : "shut up and play yer guitar!"
