Well,
I visited Thorsten (http://www.ibreathemusic.com/play/article/54) today, and I finally had a chance to play his Epiphone Wilshire
FYI, the Wilshire is one of the lesser known Epiphone-guitars... it was built between 1959 and 1970. Paul Gilbert played a Coronet ( very similar to the Wilshire ) in the early days of Racer X, and he always mentioned how great the neck is, that itīs a perfect guitar for playing fast.
Anyway, I jammed on that one a bit today, and it really is a great guitar... it sounds cool ( I played it without an amp, itīs really loud ), the neck feels great, perfect for fast stuff, it makes a lot of stuff easier....
Also, it has a certain cool vibe to it... it looks weird, but plays great and sounds cool... now I just gotta hunt one down =)

PS: Below is a pic of a 1964 Wilshire...

That axe is kinda goofy looking. But if it plays great, that's all that matters.

When I'm shopping for a new electric. I never plug it in. I figure if it resonates well and feels good, then the rest is just a matter of pickups etc. Plus, for a true evaluation, I would have to plug it in to my gear.

IMO, an electric guitar that sounds bad unplugged will always sound bad no matter what you do to it.

Good luck on your search Eric.

Exactly. It does look a bit weird, but itīs fun to shred on it...

Gilbertīs a collector of cheap pawnshop-guitars. He has DiMarzio equip them with new pickups, and sums it up like "Itīs like winning the Indy 500 in a volkswagen" :)

Oh yeah, I always go by the "How does it sound unplugged ?"-rule...

I played one of these back in '75 it was pretty good, it reminded me of a particularly good SG.

Yeah it looks kinda freaky, but it plays great and sounds good, too
Also, you can easily reach the highest frets...
