Exercise 25 in speed mechanics is the first exercise in the right hand section.
my problem is that im not sure which picking movement to use for it? Ive found that at different speeds i tend to use different picking movements. should i just use pure wrist movement for all speeds or is it ok to change my position to suit? this is the only thing im worried about in my playing at the moment and i would be grateful for some advice.

for anyone who doesn't have the speed mechanics book the exercise in question is a pedal tone exersice of the G Harmonic Minor scale on the first string. The pedal note (or notes coz the E is hit 3 times) is the open E, and the notes hit going down G F# E (12th fret) D# C etc .... in sixteenth notes...

i won't tab it out due to copyright issues just in case

to help you out with your question ... if you look at Eric's articles about picking he practically states (well that's my interpration you can check yourself and see if you agree) that there is no ONE way of picking. He also says that he tried to change his picking style when he felt his current was limited.

So i think there is really no specific answer to your question except "stick to the method that suits you". Obviously said that, some things are pretty obvious IMO e.g. the more economic the movements the better etc...

I urge you to read Eric's articles here ...

I found it very helpful to do exercise 25 for a while, and then practice exercise 35 (your basic chromatic exercise) afterwards. I think the most important thing ex. 25 is supposed to teach you is to keep your pick movements small, and when you do an exercise where you're actually fretting the notes with your left hand like ex. 35, it helps to transfer this new habit into your actual playing. I increased the speed of my chromatic exercise by 20 bpm when I incorporated the "feel" I got from ex. 25.

thanx for the advice but ive pretty much sorted it out now i think. After reading some of the ericv articles i started trying out different positioning and ive opted for pure wrist movement with my plec angled slightly and my middle, ring and pinkie rolled in. this works very well and now i only run into problems between about 120 and 144 bpm with the excercise. Then i tryed ways to improve between 120 and 144 so i tryed anchoring my pinkie, this worked very well also.

This is my first thread, ibreathe rules!!!
