I was thinking it would be pretty cool if there was some universal standard in shred guitar like there is in classical. Kind of like in a conservatory. What would you people thinki a syllabus would look like for it? Say for grades 1-9 what would you have to be able to shred and how fast?

I don't wanna sound offensive, but this is the dumbest question i've ever heard in a looooooong time...boy, guitar playin' is not about who plays faster than x guy, or anything in that category...A shred conservatory??? bah, who cares...go on, pick your metronome, practice some scales at 400 bpm/16th notes and maybe you'll find the answer to your own question...if there is any at all...
Sorry, guys.

I never said that playing fast was all there was to music but playing fast is an integral part of many players' artistic vision. Take the speed out of Petrucci, Becker, Fisk, Reinhardt, Vai, Malmsteen, Rice and you remove half of the art. They would still have great melodies but it is the speed that brings out the emotion in their phrasing.
So I guess any time somebody has a question regarding speed they will then be dubbed a fool for asking? If anything here is stupid it is that attitude. You are the musical equivalent to those fat women in grocery store line-ups who bitch about "supermodel A" and say she isn't pretty because she has ugly elbows or something like that. Pathetic.
What's the matter? Can't get it up? The metronome I mean. Harboring subconcious jealousy and resentment towards anyone who wants to improve technique? Well this forum is dedicated specifically to technique so if you don't like it then don't come here....go play some nirvana or something.
And the question isn't stupid it is basically asking people's opinion on what level of playing equals what degree of proficiency. Stop being such a lame *** little bitch mouthing off on the net using mommy's little 'puter and grow some balls.
But I guess maybve you are right....speed counts for nothing in music,....oh yeah...how many more records have you sold than Jason Becker? You have a bigger fanbase too I am sure. I am honored to be insulted by such a musical god. thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule of being a music master to converse with us mere mortals...
and while you're at it...show us something you've recorded. Let's hear your mastery. If not, shut your mouth kid.

wahooo...
slow down guys... it's christmas time.
if you don't behave i have to shred you to pieces in the manner of the great kat.
you don't want this to happen, do you!
everybody can play as fast as he wants to.
music, should not be leveled and measured and i thought that is clear and obvious to everybody. where would you put b.b.king into? level -10?
i mean..be happy to have the freedom to do what you want and not have to work yourself to the next level like in super mario bros.
everybody who would brag about how fast and difficult he could cook would be labeled a fool instantly.
i like to compare music and food.
just my HO.
now all go back to practice!!!

who is bragging? read the post. I simply asked what tempo would correspond to what playing level. Where did I mention how fast I can play? Nowhere. Use your brain.
The great Kat? hahaha are you talking about that stuck-up egotistical brat who plagiarizes paganini? hahahahahaha I consider her to be a joke...kind of like the weird al of shredders. and she isn't even that good.

you were jumping up and down pretty much beeing a bit rude here and there.
i just jumped in as the one man deescalation team.
EDIT: i re-read your post and must say that you've been damned rude, personell, agressiv, provocant and off topic.

I think your idea is great.
I think you should go for it and found a school for shredders or a study at your local conservatory.
You'll be world famous and you'll get lots of students.
They will all be fast and all sound exactly the same. Then we might even concidering hiring robots to teach! And play tricks on the student be playing ridiculously fast!
Go practice please. And don't start a riot here.

I wasn't rude until after I was called stupid for asking a question. Read the post. All I did was ask a question. And if some little bitch is gonna be a punk then of course I am going to respond. Besides who the **** are you? A morator? Then shut up. Why do you people reply when you have nothing to contribute to the forum. Look what happens...how does this post make anyone a better player? If you have a problem with people wanting to improve their technique then don't read a post that has the word 'shred' in it's title.

reinierk just because someone can play fast doesn't mean they have no emotion in their playing. Tell that to Vai. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be able to play faster.

Thats such bs... I'm for music, not for or against speed either way but thats nonsense.
I shouldn't have said that because it's amazing how easily speed freaks get excited :D I'm off to play Wind Cries Mary. it's really slow, so it must be crap and no emotion in the phrasing at all.... :D

I was being ironic, sorry if you didn't see that.
i don't say speed and emotion can't be combined.
I tried to point out to the guy that if you make a 'class' for shredders, there will be no big difference in styles. Simply because they get tought clasically (as in: with a class).

Sounds like everybodies about to start kung fu fighting, looks like someone had thier shreddies this morning. Just my to cents on the subject. I like to play fast and I've spent hours teaching myself insane triplets, sweep picking and all manner of crazy guitaring ****. But the truth is that I like music to to be part of my expression, and when I'm jamming with other people I'm just as happy to sit down with an acoustic and play some three chord pop rock tracks and have a bit of a sing along. Music is a form of entertainment, it's alright improving your technique I'm just as guilty as the next of widdling into the wee hours, but in all fairness it isn't an interesting music form and the only people who'll be vaguely interested are other guitarist and in all fairness they lose interest in two minutes. In terms of entertaining people, and putting some expression into your music some pop rock songs, or hell 'Polly' by Nirvana is a lot more fun, and a lot more what music is about. Chances are most people don't want to listen to you shredding your diddlies off at about 180bpm, they just want something familiar and that they can sing along too, I speak from experience.
Don't give up on the shred though, all the theory and technique that you learn from venturing into that sort of style can really open new doors in your playing and music in other areas, opening your ears to wierd diminished runs and odd scales can give you all kinds of cool ideas.

please don't let this be another speed vs. emotion thread.
come on guys let this thread just die or it will go on forever and ever.. and we don't have that much time - shouldn't we rather be practicing or learning stuff?
we surely won't get anything useful out of this here.

Hey I practice tonnes and right now I'm stuck at a college computer so I ain't got anything better to do. I wasn't really arguing in a favuor of either, I like chord strumming as much as I do shredding, I think I was just saying things the way they are. But if you wanna take this outside, *assumes angry monk kung fu position of the slightly upet, a little constipated marmoset*, Ay Ya!

Guys i will only put this one post about the issue coz i don't want to get into it.
There is only one thing i want out of my technical playing abilities.
THAT THEY DON'T LIMIT MY MUSIC -- THE ONE IN MY HEAD
that's all.
What i don't want is for my technical stuff to INFLUENCE my playing. That is a big don't do. I've been wondering for months how can i do this. Luckily i got through some good resources and like here, stetina's books (even though sometimes he gets too technical as well) and now i got across this book (http://www.raisingthebarre.com/Barre.htm). A bunch of etudes designed to study music in such a way that it helps you increase you technical abilities (on its way via mail).
Don't make it a speed vs emotion -- "feel" is so da*n personal that we won't get anywhere -- it's like me trying to convince you that blue is better then green. Try convice your sister that black is a better colour then pink! GOOD LUCK!
To answer the FIRST post -- i don't think there is need for more schools beyond the standard ones like berklee, GIT and all the rest. Shredding (brrr) is a study which people have to indulge on their own because it's mechanical, it takes practice not actual teaching. You can be given a book to shred in 2 minutes, but you have to work through it for years to get to a level. Since stricly no teachers are required for that. I don't understand the need to set levels of speed but maybe that's coz i'm dumb
Finally just to make sure i don't get misinterpreted. I'm no fan of shredding -- never listened to michael angelo batio, neither francesco fareri, neither rusty cooley and all the rest, i just hear how fast they are from here and there.
edit:
so shall we turn this thread into -- do you want your technical abilities to limit your musicianship? How can you cater you versatility on the instrument for YOUR musical needs? (..and prove to everyone we are more intelligent than we sounded till now)
Hey ReinerK - I knew you were being ironic, it wasn't your quote I used. I was just having a joke as well :D Lighten up dudes, all styles are cool. Lets end it there (At least until Noiz checks in)

LMAO ... you got me there it's lack of colour in physics.
But the fun part is that in reality they do it using many colours ....
Wow that should be the theme of a Zappa song

Look...do you really think that this "shred conservatory" thread really contributes to the community?? think again...and do you REALLY think this post makes you or us better players?? think again...and i'm not being a punk, i'm just living the reality.

I feel speed is great along with playing very slow and emotionally. Why can't we find away to mix them together in our songs? Solos really sound out when your playing all these fast notes then you just change the pace and play 2 slow bends to really get people screaming. Well what I am tryign to really say is a song with slow emotionness notes in a whole song could and will sound good but after awhile of just hearing a bunch of fast shredding in a whole song gets tiring. This is only my opinion.
