iv recently started to take guitar allot more seriosly than just playing nirvana songs in the evening,i now practise atleast 4 hours a day with a metronome,iv heard great things about certain instructional books, speed mechanics and rock disapline to name a couple, but im not sure which book or dvd to get, im looking to get faster and generally more persice,i dont know theroy i just play by tab or ear so i was wondering, do i have to learn theroy to use books like speed mechanics? im not terable at soloing but im no gods gift either, bassically i cant spanish fly but i can stairway with ease. articles on this site have helped allot and this is by far the best place to learn for free online with people who know what there talking about, so what book or dvd do u guys recomend?

You don't need to learn theory but it helps a lot(unless of course you are some kind of prodigy) John Petrucci's book is fantastic for learning technique to improve your speed and accuracy, and just overall playing ability. if you look around the review section of this site you will find books you can get from amazon with full reviews of the quality of them as well as a general over view of what they try to teach. You might wanna give them a look.

From what I've heard John McLaughlin's instructional DVD is suppose to be as close to the be all end all of guitar instruction as you can get.
I can't give you any first hand experience because I've sworn off buying it until school is done. That, and it isn't cheap. But apparently in the last lesson he stops, looks at the screen and says something along the lines of "if you can understand what I'm getting at here, I'll hire you."
Although I've also heard it gets pretty advanced pretty quick...not for the faint of heart.

I'd recommend...
Marty Friedman's Melodic Control and Exotic Playing
Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock I
John Petrucci's Rock Discipline
Brett Garsed's Rock Fusion
Jimmy Bruno's No nonsense Jazz Guitar
Ritchie Kotzen's Rock Chops and Hi-Tech Rock Guitar
Cutting Loose with Reb Beach
Greg Howe's Hot Licks
Those are way old, but they're the best...from over-the-top technique to soloing/note-choice tips, you have it all in that bunch...

As far as I know Jimmy Bruno's 'No Nonsense Jazz Guitar' is no longer being made...he's suppose to be comming out with a new one sometime soon.
Great video though.

i shall be getting the john mclaughlin dvd hopefully in the next month or so. man, that guy completely redefined how i thought the guitar should be played. there was a demo from it in an edition of Guitarist magazine (UK) a few months back, in which he covered the modes etc. there is also a video of it on his official website www.johnmclaughlin.com (http://www.johnmclaughlin.com).
importantly though, there is no tablature included with the release. there is a pdf file of tab that you can download from the website, but i dont believe this covers all the parts of the dvd (and im almost certain it doesnt include the lick library that comes with the release). so you might want to brush up on your sight reading before attempting it! its also about £140, so you want to be sure you are ready for that level of commitment before buying it (it is intended as a 3 year course).
i have john petrucci's rock discipline dvd and thats ok...personally i found it to be a bit cold. it has an almost complete emphasis on practise and discipline, its not too much fun! but the good thing is the you don't have to play to the exact speed of petrucci to progress, rather you only need to work each lick up to the level you are happy with then you can progress. having said that, its always worth pushing yourself, and some of his licks only really sound good at speed...but hey, its a shred video, you know what you're getting! and you can always have a good laugh at john's dress sense anyway!
hope some of that helps!

May I humbly suggest you first have a read of the testimonials for my book PlaneTalk at http://www.thatllteachyou.com/testimonial2.php , and if you like to find out more go to http://www.thatllteachyou.com (http://www.thatllteachyou.com/testimonials2.php)
It's not subtitled 'The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book' for nothing. There's a DVD too.

I got a good one recently - "Frank Gambale Modes: No More Mystery". Not only does he go through a great set of lessons that break the modes down to the basics ... but there are several performances from him, Holdsworth and Joe Pass.

my fav book was the frank Gambale book. I think its called solo technique or something.
It shows how to solo over different type of chord voicings and goes through different modes, intervals and arps.
It helped me understand what to used over what chord and such.

I say get as many books as you can afford, but don't get books that cover basically the same material. Right now, I've got my teacher's book, which covers a wide spectrum of things, plus a few Troy Stetina books...
-Metal Lead Guitar Vol.1
-Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol.1
-Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar
Also, I'm going to pick up Fretboard Logic SE soon, which focuses on theory and such.

I'd also strongly recommend the Troy Stetina books : Heavy Metal Lead and Rhythm guitar series, as well as Speed Mechanics ! Great stuff !!!
Furthermore : Petrucci's Rock Discipline, Paul Gilberts 1st video, Vinnie Moore's video (advanced Lead Guitar techniques) and if you're very much into shred I'd also recommend Michael Angelo's Speed Kills.
If you're getting into Jazz the video by Jimmy Bruno (No nonsense Jazzguitar) is is great choice !

I'm looking for a classical/jazz/flamenco (any one) book or dvd, but don't want to get gypped. My fear is that half of any of these beginner things will show me basics that I already know. I am probably a mid-intermediate level player, in rock at least. Sorry I'm not trying to say how good I am or anything, just trying to explain my situation. Anyways, if anyone knows of a good instructional method out there, please let me know. Thanks.

John Petrucci's Rock Discipline is great, so is the first Paul Gilbert video.
I recently bought "Diatonic Theory & Harmony" by Doug Doppler and it is a great DVD for learning the neck.
