Yeah, I offered Brett a review, and he seemed tolike the idea. He always was quite supportive towards ibreathe. Even though he hasnīt written an article for us yet ( heīs pretty busy ), he was nice enough to send me an advance copy of "Big Sky" about a month before that album was released, and he answered all my boring questions in that interview, too
I am very much looking forward to that DVD, especially since it has both an instructional part, AND a performance part.
Years ago, Brett was nice enough to send me a VHS of a performance he did with TJ at the MI, and that one was a pure pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, I lost that one... =(
But judging by the clips on his site, the DVD has way better footage, sound and editing anyway, so... YAY !

i'm gonna post questions here...

feel free to move if you intend to start a new thread.

1. How long is the DVD? All included.
2. How practicable is it?
Is it just watch.
Watch and practice.
Or learn what to practice and include in your practice.
3. What are the expected lessons?
4. Is the slide section a good starter?
5. Is paypal the only way to buy the beast?

Sorry for asking bunch of questions, allow me to tell you i always was the guy sitting in the front in class shooting the nastiest questions ;)

OK, letīs see
First of all, I just transferred one section of the DVD into a lesson for ibreathe, with exclusive permission by Brett himself. Itīs the first chapter, hybrid picking, and should be on ibreathe soon. Once Guni has created a new blank article for me, Ill go ahead and put it into an article. It will have the TAB, MP3s of the DVD audio, and a transcription of Brettīs explanations

Regarding your qīs

The instructional part lasts for about 1 hour ( 1:07 plus credits and a special outro ). The live-performance lasts for about half an hour, and the bonus clips ( 3 of them ) is a few minutes each, so youīre looking at about 1:30 - 2 hrs

2. How do you mean ? Do you mean "Does it include exercises" ? Yes it does... and it does nto only have exercises, but also great musical ideas you can create your own exercises and improvs on. Brett also does some improvisation in the improvisation-chapter
So you can both watch ( the instructional part and the live part ) and get inspired, and get inspired to work on those topics. You can also take the exercises directly and try to play along, but Brett suggests to go on your own and be creative.

3. Which topics āre covered on the DVD you mean ? Hybrid picking, Legato, Slide-playing, fretboard coverage, ear training...

4. Yes. Itīs not the usual "blues-type sliding for beginners", but itīs quite basic and has some great ideas on playing triads with the slide etc. Itīs a different angle than a blues-based instructional.

5. Apparently. However, try to email Brett or the webmaster ( email links are on his site, under "Contact" ) to see whether another option will be available ( money order or CC )

Hope this helps

Thanks Eric!!

that was helpful ... with question 3 i tried to ask if its like the other instructionals, "Hey lookie what i can do." i was always scared from that stuff. That was a useless question really.

As long as i can pull out something i'd be more than happy to pay for it.

Thanks again Eric for your time!

hey eric, just checked out the review. i see he has a sweeping exercise similar to JP rock disipline.i thought 'well, i have done that before'....but i had a closer look....and it had a RH FINGERING AS WELL. does this mean he plays arpeggios via the pima technique!!!!!!!!.. if so.....how fast:D , i just want to know how fast someone could fingerpick arpeggios cause it would be amazing to see a professional fingerpicker do what a shredder would sweep.

thanks

Robert, this DVD by no means is like "Look what I can do". Brett constantly points out "If you wanna work it up to speed, thatīs up to you, I am just showing you the technique, and I use it musically". Very inspiring and musical.

Arpetude... LOL; I take it you havenīt had a chance to see Brett play yet. If you can, check out this DVD or his instructional video for REH ( which I did a review about as well ). Yes, he does hybrid-pick those sweep-type licks.
This is gonna be explained in the upcoming article I did based on that chapter fof his DVD. I canīt tell you at what speed exactly he can do those licks, but he is blindingly fast. I wish I could extract a video clip from his DVD so you can see just how well his right hand is synchronized when he does that last exercise from the hybridpicking-lesson... but I donīt wanna take too much from the DVD, the stuiff in the article will be plenty already.
As far as I know ( I think I asked him back when I was taking lessons from him at MI ), Brett never sweeps, he focusses on playing this kinda lick with hybrid picking. He never went "Oh, I want to do those Gambale-like licks but I canīt sweep them"... he just wanted to get that sound, and found his own way of doing it.
The upcoming article will explain where it came from.
I had a chance to see Garsed-Helmerich live at the MI, and it was amazing... both guys have their own, unique style. TJ does amazing stuff with 8 finger-tapping, and Brett does a lot of this hybrid-picking stuff...
Goes to show you that you donīt necessarily HAVE to sweep arpeggio-licks with one note per string. Steve Morse alternate picks them ( Tommy Alderson told me about a little "guitar headcutting for fun" between Morse and Vinnie Moore, and Moore did this really cool sweep-pickin solo. Morse copied what he played at pretty much the same speed, ALTERNATE PICKING IT ! ), Brett hybrid-picks them.
Stay tuned for the lesson

By the way, he does not do the "pima"-technique, he indeed used hybrid-picking... holding the pick with the index-finger and thumb, and also using the remaining 3 fingers to pick the strings. He did take some lessons in classical guitar, and that sure helped to inspire that approach
