My guitar teacher always told me you should pay very close attention to how you play a certain lick. When I read Eric Vandenberg's (great) article about Paul Gilbert I came across this bluesy lick (first lick on the Raw blues topic). Here's my question: when you play that lick ( fretting the notes on the fifth fret whit your first finger) do you let your first finger stay on those three strings or do you move them from string to string, when playing the actual lick? (hope this isn't too confusing)

Thx

Good question actually. I tried both approaches, but what I do today when I play that kinda lick is, I roll the index finger ( similar to what I do when I sweep on adjacent strings ), so that it does fret only one string at a time, but doesn´t move too far away from the fretboard.
Check out the second sweep-article, the part abotu "rolling". I think that, if you try, you´ll see easily what I meant.
Hope this helps, thanks for your kind words

Well I actually have. When you're playing a legato lick over 2 strings and just repeating a certain pattern do you use that roll- technique or do you fret the 2 strings with your first finger all the time?

Yes, I kinda use the same rolling technique. Let´s say the lick is on the high e- and B-string. I fret the notes on the e-string, lowest one with the index finger. When I move to the B-string, I just kinda roll the index finger, so it frets that B-string, but mutes the high e-string ( cuz it touches it, but doesn´t press down ). When I go back up to the e-string, the B-string is muted by the tip of my index finger, which is touching it.
Hope this helps

Sorry but I'm a little confused now. When do you use this technique and when not. Do you use this technique when you're lets say playing your a minor pentatonic(fifth position) from the low to the high E?
Please help

Another example: you're playing your D, E and F# on your A-string, then you're playing you're G on the D string and you go back up to the A-string and repeat the pattern.

D-------5-------5------5--
A-5-7-9---5-7-9--5-7-9--............

Do you use this roll-technique on this lick?

Thx

i would use legato for that.

5h7h9 or 9p7p5, then once u have it up to speed, pick it out using whatever method works best.

yeah you can use legato or picking, but do you use that roll technique to fret the 2 notes at the fifth fret????
