Ok, so I listened to that song Concerto on the cacophony cd, and in my arrogant foolishness decided to learn it. Little did I know that the arpeggios right after the slow intro are about 10 times faster than it at first seemed. the riff starts on the 10th fret of the high e, and then goes to 7th, then 8th on b string, then 7th on g, then it just goes back up and down a few times. So when fingering this I've found that I could either use my pinky for the tenth and my middle for the eighth, but then I have to switch my index back and forth really fast in between the e and g strings on the seventh. Or I could just bar the seventh with my index and hold put middle on the eighth and pinky on 10th. The bar is definitely easier but I notice that with the strings always pressed down they tend to ring together a lot mor than if I was just fingering it. So which one should I do, or which do you do if you played this. There are a lot of instances in this song with the same pattern all over the fretboard so...

Here is the ptb
As a side note, I can't believe that the Children of Bodom guitarist got stuck with the worst f#@$** singer I've ever heard. That band rules but the singer needs to shut up.

I suggest you don't bar it, you may as well develop some good sweeping technique as you learn the song rather than taking shortcuts..and as you said barring it will make the notes ring and it's just won't sound right.

BTW, the children of bodom guitarist IS the children of bodom singer, assuming you're referring to Alexi Laiho, who writes the songs and plays most of the leads.
And I don't mind his vocals, remember he has to sing and play that insane stuff on stage at the same time.

Thx for the help. Lol cob guitarist is singer? Well then nvrmind...I guess I can let it slide. In an hour of listening to his songs though, I think I hear like 2 actual words.

Anyways, I also noticed that during his sweeps, there are a few wide parts like from fret 5 to 10. I mean I can stretch it, but not comfortably or fast. I heard that Marty Friedman has like a really small guitar that allows for huge stretches. Anyone know if that is true? I can't even tell if that is becker or friedman doing the main licks.

hi E. Lusive,

i know what you mean. but either will get you the speed and accuracy. i know yngwie chooses to barre (i see him do it when he comes round to my house). I prefer to articulate each note and NOT barre.....why..image really.!.it looks cool cause your fingers move much faster and looks much more impressive:D .

i have provided audio of me playing that shape higher up on the fretboard at 15 for the pinky. i suggest you do it there aswell...then move lower.

in the first 10 seconds i play it with NO BARRE

in the other . with barre . its sounds more or less the same and you can achieve the same results by fingering both ways. picking for me is...up for 2 THEN down for 3.

i am having HUGE problems with my mic. its 60% hiss. when i record clean stuff(no distortion) it sounds horrible. so you will have to turn up the volume and ignore hiss.

p.s. that piece will take you ages to play.....good luck:cool:

I'm sorry could you speak into my good ear, because I thought I just heard you say that yngwie comes over to your house. *Clears out his ears*. That's frickin awesome. I mean, seriously if I were jamming with yngwie instead of being cramped into a little 2x2 square foot dorm room, I would have the power of 10 guitarists. Not really, but still that's awesome.
BTW - thanks for the recording. I noticed that when you do the bar, it doesn't seem to ring out like mine. Do you do some sort of dampening technique, or is your mic just not receiving the ring. I know what you mean when you say it will take ages to play. Every time I load up my compy, I just kinda grimace at the power tab for about a minute then attempt to learn at least one new bar, before my hands shrivel into useless lumps.

Arpetude, what kind of cord are you using to plug your mic into the computer? Are you using a balanced (Ex. XLR-XLR cable; standar mic cable with female and male ends) or and unbalanced one (XLR-1/4")? If you're using an unbalanced cable you're going to get hiss and amplify that all day long. What you're hearing is 60 cycle hum from all of the appliances around you (computer monitor, etc.) Use a balanced cable and your problems should go away. Let me know if this helps. If it doesn't work, AIM me.

sorry i was taking the piss when i say yngwie comes round to my house. it works when i talk to people in real life cause they know i'm kidding due to facial expression, i won't do it again though because i know some people on this board DO HAVE YNGWIE GOING ROUND TO THERE HOUSE:eek: .

i remember mike campese started an artical with 'oh btw, yngwie was round my house last night'.....show of:p .

the reason why it does not ring is becuase i developed the technique. i remember i used to think that by barreing it, it would make it ring. I COULD NOT GET RID OF IT. i thought i'd have to articulate each note with my LH. but honestly......either works. i have no dampener or changed my mic settings etc. just takes alot of practice...btw yngwie does barre most of his 3-string stuff(have his instructional where he plays the arpeggios to demon driver and barres it all). i actually do it both ways(like in audio) but prefer not to barre because it looks insane due to fingers moving faster.

i am learning a rather large piece like yourself.my advice (after reaching pure insanity) is to just print off the FIRST page. concentrate on that. then print off the second etc. if you look(or print) it all off. the goal will seem impossible. sort of like looking at all the work required for a degree course......instead you look at what is needed to be done THIS semester (or block).

i don't know what cord i'm using. it's one that plugs directly into the computer mic slot. cost me £10!.

sorry, i don't use AIM. i will PM you in a few days after i find out what cord i'm using.

Mikei managed to get rid of the hiss from my mic..i use cool edit pro and it has a hiss reduction. so all is fine now:cool:
