When you play a pattern on your low E, do you guys mute the other strings with your left hand or do you put your hand above the strings? (hope this isn't to complicated)
Thx
Id mute with the left hand fingers, its not something i think about too much, its just habit after years of playin with loads of distortioin

Use both my left and right hand, depends on what I'm playing.

yeah normally I would also mute with my left hand fingers but I figured out that it sometimes causes some string noise on the upper strings because your hand is moving all the time....
But thanx anyway

I tend to use my right hand for most of the muting. I use my fingertips as much as possible when playing riffs and solos so I can keep control over all the notes very easily.
Sometimes, like when I'm going bluesy or rock and roll I use a blues left hand style and bring the thumb up round the neck and use my left fingers to mute stuff.
Mostly though, I let the natural movement made by my right hand picking style move across and mute strings that I'm not playing. Especially with sweep picking and so on.
Try and focus on not making so much unwanted noise in the first place. I know you get hum and such but it helps millions if you only sound the notes you want. You'd be surprised how much background noise can be made by the tiniest of pull offs or touches of a wrong note.
