i had a lot of trouble in the past when trying to transfer my normal picking tech over to a thumpick. i d always found them to feel stiffer to work with than a regular pick and stumming just doesn t feel the same at all. i know a lot of great players who have success using one( brett mason, chet atkins, etc) but i never was able to get it feeling natural. iv tried different ones but the stiff feeling seems to remain. maybe ive just tried crappy ones but is there a chance that im just missing out on a few tech adjustments to my playing? i understand that i could just use a hybrid style with a reg pick but it isnt quite as comfortable when playing fingerstyle kinda things.

A thumbpick and strumming. I have had some success with a thumbpick IF ... I will use my index finger to hold the back side of the pick. That is the only way I can get an up strum while using a thumbpick..... not sure that is what you were having problems with......

oh i do support the thumbpick when flatpicking in the same way that i would a regular pick but it definetly doesn't feel the same when it comes into contact with the strings and the strums just dont feel smooth

I do not normally use the thumbpick any more, I guess I felt the same way. When and if I fingerpick I just use my fingers.
Beyond that I can not pin-point a reason for not using the thumbpick.

i like the idea of the thumpick as it will let me use my picking chops as well as offer a better way or fingerpicking versus a straight hybrid approach with a flatpick( i hate picking with my pinky but dont just want to use two fingers) but it just doesn t feel natural enough.
