Have you ever seen Jimmy Bruno's left hand position (Hot Licks video)? It really antonished me. I thought my hand would not have "the feel" using this classical position. I don't know but I don't feel the "ummph!". Oh yeah.. i feel empty. But his fingers was completely in shape!! I've been using rock grip for two years now (baseball bat). Oh I also playing great with drum (maybe that's why I'm not feel the "umph!"? not penetrate the neck entirely?). Should I changed to classic position the way he does or stick the way I'm doing now? Because rock grip seem kind of cool to me, where used by legendary guitarists (paul gilbert, joe satriani, shawn lane, jason becker, marty friedman, etc) and dream by many guitarists...

I guess it depends on the situation and what you are playing at that moment.
It would be a good thing to practice a fluent change between both "position-styles".
There is no ultimate position - use what works best.

EDIT: Oh.. and don't worry about what's cool or not - go for optimizing the technique first, then go for the looks ;).

Petrucci uses the classical position, with the guitar resting on his left leg. I use that one too, and it allows for more reach for wide-stretch licks and less strain on the back and right arm.

I want to create different scales. Wide stretch for me is norm in guitar history nowadays. I desire to incorprate chromatic, 3noteperstring, 2noteperstring, and 1noteperstring at scale. This is my originality and this is why I used rock grip on the first place which my finger would not move enormously and have stability. I've seen Rusty Cooley use classical grip (which thumb was behind and really way lower the neck), but his chromatic seems to have too wide, not have stability (I'm afraid of slippering the thumb from the neck, which result me to crack my bone ouww!), strap too high, and his finger seems difficult to incorprate "closer and move symmetrical" scale.

I desire to have 7string guitar. I never try one. But many guitarist seems hate or uncomfortable to use one (Steve Vai himself, Malmsteen, etc)..

Oh I have just tried 7 strings yesterday. And damn it is hard for me to execute the common way I used (the rock grip - thumb over the neck).
I try to change into classical grip (thumb behind the neck, and use the very tip of fingers), but then I have severely problem with my muting. Can you insult me what should I do? because when I use rock grip, my fingers are kind of flat and muted with my index finger. Anyone having the same problem with left hand?

i.e - oh my right hand using floating wrist picking and muted quick well actually..
