There are many articles written about holding the pick and stuff, but how about the left hand? I know about the " thumb behind the neck rule", and that's the way I started out, but when I see players like Vai or Gilbert, most of the time they're puting their thumb over the neck. Recently I went back to the thumb behind the neck method, but now I'm having the feeling that I'm holding my left hand too much above the strings, which causes difficulties while playing...

Any advice would be more than welcome...

Thx

The thumb over the neck trick can be used for muting and fretting, not just to get that thumb somewhere. You might want to read 'The Art of Picking' article series by Eric Vandenberg. Here's the link to the first article:

But you'll need to decide what feels more natural for you - there are no rights or wrongs when it comes to your unique style of playing.
