This is the first bit of paradigm shift by Liquid tension experiment, it sounds really cool if you can play it fast enough, around 200 bpm i think, i cant, lol

I suggest you get powertab and download Dream Theater tabs and John Petrucci tabs. Some good songs to get are "Lost Without You", "Glasgow Kiss" by John Petrucci and "Scarred", "Fatal Tragedy", "Overture 1928", and "The Glass Prison" by Dream Theater. These songs all have good ryhtym guitar parts and GREAT guitar solos. Definitely good chop builders there. Lots of fast picking, legato, and sweep picking you will find in there--good luck.

Here's the last bit of 6:00 from Dream Theater: Awake.
e------------------------------------------------
B---14-16-14-13-----------14-16-14-13----------
G----------------15-13-------------------15-13--
D------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------
Repeat that, then play the same thing, but in 6th posistion:
e---------------------------------------
B--7-9-7-6---------7-9-7-6-------------
G-----------8-6--------------8-6-------
D---------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------
There's a bit more to it than that, so check out the actual music for the rest. I use those as exercises for picking, and they're pretty helpful.

Should you keep your index planted on the B string parts or just start with your middle finger, and your index not fretting anything?

I'm not sure how Petrucci does it, but I use this fingering:
e---------------------------
B---14-16-14-13------------
G----------------15-13----
D---------------------------
A---------------------------
E----------------------------
2 4 2 1 3 1
Sorry if that didn't line up right.

im not sure about how good on guitar you are, but try and learn 'As I Am' by Dream Theater alot of good stuff in there, and his solo is beautiful.

Here is the tab of the "fatal tragedy" solo. To me this sums up petrucci's playing, fast and awesome technique and control.
It includes blazing AP, Harmonic minor usage, Pentatonic phrases, sweep picking. It is just a downright great guitar solo. Try learning it, cause i know i can't. too hard too fast.

Check out Metropolis pt 1 the instrumental section before the 3rd verse is sublime, and the solo is pretty out there too. Look for a detailed tab at www.powertabs.net
I hope this helps

"As I Am" is a great song, one of my favorite DT pieces. I would have to disagree about the guitar solo being beautiful, though. Petrucci's playing here is technically top notch, but the solo, to me anyway, has very little to do with the song. After the intro he goes into this barrage of notes that seem to turn into a speed exercise that doesn't go anywhere musically. I don't have anything against fast playing and blazing solos (I can listen to someone like Joe Stump for hours), but the "As I Am" solo doesn't do anything for me. On the other hand, the solo in "Pull Me Under" is teriffic.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned the Petrucci and Rudess solos on Blind Faith (the last solo is killer), the stuff on Learning to Live, The Mirror/Lie, and the shredfest on Stream Of Consciousness - intense, and a great chopbuilder.
He also does this little octave-arpeggio thing that drives me nuts when I try to figure it out, I don't know how he plays each specific one (he never seems to do the same thing twice) but I do something like this:
E-----------------10-----15/17~~~----------------------------------
B------------12------12----------------------------------------------
G-------7-------7----------------------------------------------------
D---9-----9----------------------------------------------------------
A-----9--------------------------------------------------------------
E-7------------------------------------------------------------------
Any comments on how he usually does this would be greatly appreciated.
Rock On,
The Jeffinator
