Is palm muting while shredding necessary?
For example when I do Alt picked runs up or down I don't palm mute at all. None of the strings ring out because my thumb holding the pick silences them as it passes. Is there any reason why I should palm mute as well?
I ask because when I play, for example, Far Beyond the Sun, I don't mute at all during the first speedy descending run after the intro (the one that repeats twice before the little dim7th sweeps).
It sounds like the record. (Sorry if you don't know it. It's just an example, this isn't a question about how to play that particular song.)
However, I'm having real problems with ascending runs and alt. picking the lower strings in general. Should I be muting when I alt. pick on those?
Hope that made sense. Related Quiestion:
I can run up and down all over the top four strings (d g b e) but on the lower ones (E a ) my hand kind of chokes. This sucks when I need a big ascending run.
I pick from the wrist and anchor with my third finger. When I pick the low strings theres nothing under my palm (my palm rests very lightly on the low strings when I pick the high ones) so maybe thats it?
Or is my anchoring finger causing this?
Or do I just need more practice on ascending runs and low string alt. picking?
Sorry if this is confusing.
