Hi guys

Im a bit confused how exactly do you play to a metronome?
I hear alot of pple talking about you should practice everything with it. Ive just bought one and practiced this lick or solo, and feel the metronome is not fast enough. Im doin like 220bpm, like 1 note per beat

I think i have to sub divide the beat. But how exactly do you do this do u count the beats in your head. I find this very hard to do. To count the beats in my head and play the right notes at the right time. Also how do i know if im keeping in time with the beat. I usually find myself concentrating so much on hitting the right notes and forgeting about keeping in time with the beat.

Also most the licks i try have faster and slower passages in them how on earth, do you to stay in time when suddenly you come to a faster flurry of notes.

Do i just keep practicing and hope i break through this barrier or is there another way? Any tips and advice anyone has would be orgasmic as i really want to overcome this problem.

Cheers

usually 16ths, 4 notes / beat.

Well, I mostly use my metronome when the notes are even, like all sixteenth notes or sixtuplets.. Otherwise i just play by feel...
In the beginning it may be a bit difficult to combine both hitting the right notes and make the notes sound even in tempo, but after a while you will get used to it. Here's a small scheme :

4th notes: one note per Beat
8th notes: two notes per beat
16th notes: four notes per beat
32th notes: 8 notes per beat
sixteenth note triplets/ sixtuplets: 6 notes per beat

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Hope this helps

Another good approach is to treat the 'clicks' as 2 & 4. This yields goodness in several areas and, while I had never thought of it quite this way, effectively increases the maximum rate of a standard metronome to about 500 beats per minute. I am in absolutely no danger of playing more than whole notes at that speed ;-)

That's also cool because loosens the training wheels, so to speak. You keep the beat while getting used to not hearing each beat.
