Alright

1. Ive got this wierd pain shooting up my wrist. So Im taking a break...but...anyone know what it could be? Its my left hand. I was just running around with some scales at about 160 16th notes and it started to hurt on and off, So I stopped.

2. Ive got this really wierd picking style and I need help getting it down...

Id like to post a video but i dont think thats possible...but when im picking a scale, a 3nps pattern, I find as I go to the next string i use my fingers holding the pick to change its angle...and it looks really wierd...

Should I be picking without moving my fingers at all and just moving my wrist and my arm to put my wrist and pick on the string I want? Cuz then I wonder if i end up using my arm and I never know if im using my arm or not.

3. Anyone know any good tap arpeggio shapes? etc? Im really getting into that stuff. Same for two handed legato. Ive been doing chromatics and stuff with my right hand, but I need more for that..

Ya. Hate to make it sound like a sport. But some dude was insulting my technique and he hasnt even heard me. So ill admit. I really wanna work on it so I can just blow him to ****. Im already alot faster, but I wanna kick it up. I play guitar just about non stop everyday except for school. So I come home at 4 and play till 6 then eat then play from 7 till 9 then break cuz I dont want to do more than 2 hours at a time or I might really damage my wrist. So ya. I dunno...ya...

First, you have to take it easy...you want to keep playing, you don't want to take "breaks" and wait till your pain is gone...don't rush yourself and don't push yourself beyound your limits too quick...otherwise, you'll get more than hurt...it's your own body's defense method...it'll stop yourself in some way before you cause yourself severe damage, so take it easy...

Second, you have to understand that music, and specifically guitar playing is not a competition...i dunno about you, but i play for my own pleasure...i don't play to please other people...i guess you're getting my point there, eh?? The thing is, get better because you need to and because you want to, not because some other jerk is "insulting" your playing...

Third, I have an article about arpeggio techniques in the IBM Archive...it's simply called "Arpeggios" and it takes you through several different ways and techniques of playing arpeggios...there's a tapping arpeggio section that you may wanna check out...http://www.ibreathemusic.com/article/170 (http://)

For right hand legato, you're on the right path...practice chromatics very slowly and ensuring good dynamics - be sure that all the notes, especially the ones you play with your pinky, have the same volume...then you can start expanding the stretch between your fingers...for example, play 12/index finger-14/middle finger-15/ring finger-16/pinky...notice the whole step between the index and the middle fingers...and so on...then you can add whole step stretches between the rest of the fingers. try placing your fingers on different strings...and play arpeggiated ideas only with your right hand, hammering the notes you wanna play.

Ok, that was my pretty small contribution...Hope that may help you on your quest, young lad...

Mmm.. Thank you very much. It happened to be that article that got my very interested in tapping. As you no doubt know. Most of the time when you say tapping to someone its a triplet that is either exactly or almost exactly a replica of Eruption. Once I saw that article I was like. Woah! Stop the fun bus! I learnt everything on there. Im just trying to get more to learn :)

I see...i'm glad you liked my article on Arpeggios...it's good to know that i'm kinda helping people with the things i write...especially with technique, 'cause i've always thought that technique is such a personal matter...there's no wrong or right technique for me, as long as what you're playing sounds right -good tone and good articulation.

There's this guitarist named TJ Helmerich that is a master of tapping...he can play dazzling things with the technique, I encourage you to check him out...but beware, he can rock your world pretty easily...

Yeah, it's best to just take it easy for a while if pain arises, otherwise you could cause serious damage to your hands/wrists. I have taken almost 2 months off due to an injury and after I have my hand checked (this coming Tuesday) by a specialist to make sure there's nothing wrong. I'll start back. Something else to consider is making sure you don't come back too hard or you'll reinjure yourself. Depending on how serious you got hurt and how long you've been off there are different "reenter" programs. Mainly use common sense and if it hurts (even if it's just a little) stop. Good luck on your recovery.

get some Glucosimine pills (arthritis pills), generic brand will do, and try to relax more... relax

Your probably trying to push yourself and in doing so, straining, and tightening up.

David: I will check him out. :) Thanks for the suggestion. And yes, it was a good article, though I found it really hard since I was just starting arpeggios as I read it and the first sweep had legato and sweeping involved, and finger rolling.

ForgottenKing: 2 months? Thats horrible!!! :O I almost died in the week that my bridge snapped and I couldent play. GAH! Good luck with your wrist/ hand. I hope it works out for you...I think ill be more careful with my practice now!

Mateo: If the pain continues, ill probably take a 2 day break...but if its still somewhat bad after that ill check out the pills :) Thanks.

I know it's horrible. I still don't know what did it. At first I thought it was piano or an old injury but now I am leaning more towards carrying heavy equipment using only a few fingers to hold it (I know it's dumb but hey you do those things without thinking) I'd carry a small 15 watt amp and a guitar case in the same hand (happened to be the injured hand) while the other one would carry a whole ton of stuff as well... I wonder why only one got injured... beats me. Anyhow, it's getting better little by little. I just need a profesional to tell me I am good to go. And I'll ease my way back.
