Ok, I've included a powertab of the most basic sweep...you know, the one where you pull off from the 17th to the 14th on the high E and then sweep 15 and 16 on the B and G respectively...now, my problem is..when you begin the sweep with an upstroke, you have to stop your sweeping motion to wait for the pull-off on the high E and then start the motion again to finish the sweeped lick...know what I mean?...hmmmmmm....how do you manage this feat?

Do it slow at first till you get it down then speed it up.

I would do it just as you said: Starting with an upstroke, "wait" for the pull-off, then continue sweeping upwards. Start slowly, work on it.

sorry.. correction.

2nd thought.. ignore my first post please. Duh.

If you have a flowing right-hand movement, then an upstroke is logical.

17 up, then a imaginary down on the pull off, then sweep the rest up.

my bad :-/

So that would really mean you "wait" for the next upstroke.
if you practice it slowly, do a "air-downstroke" while pulling of. That way you'll be in time much better!

Sorry for misleading.. i better delete my first post. ;)

I always do a downstroke on the 17, imaginary upstroke on 14, and continue the sweep. Then I can repeat the lick at warp 9 with another downstroke on 17...

Well, I'm with the up, wait, sweep up crew.

Purely because if I had swept down first I would havbe finished the down sweep on 14 then played an upstroke on 17 instead of hammering on, so then I'm ready to PO, and keep on sweepin' up.

After a bit of thought, I decided to tab out three examples of this lick. The first one I'd use a downstroke to start as I mentioned before, and continue this pattern as I repeat the lick.

The 2nd lick is different. I'd start with a downstroke, but upon repeating it I'd do the upsweep like others do.

The 3rd lick is just like the first, but with a mini sweep down too. I like the "5" grouping sound, so this is a natural for that.

Thats the way I do it too if I want to use the pull off. Another option I use the most would be to pick the first note with a downstroke and the second with an upstroke. Its not too hard, your hand is naturally ready to do the downstroke anyway-its ready to go in the that direction...or you can do it like Richie Kotzen- Pick the first note and hammer the rest of the arpeggio!

Shawn Lane did the same, and Greg Howe does too, occasionally...
