im having trouble with sweeping barre patterns, for example, if i was to play:
-10p7-------7-10p7--------7------------------ ect
------7---7---------7---7--------------------
--------7-------------7-----------------------
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
how would i keep the strings from bleeding into each other? yngwie uses this pattern in blitzkreig and it doesn't sound muted, is it just perfected 'string rolling' with one finger? this is really confusing me, help would be appreciated, cheers guys

You're absolutely right, its finger rolling.Make sure to keep it as subtle as possible- Keep at it, it gets easier. Frank Gambale perfected the technique, his Speed Picking book is great!

I have exactly the same problem.. I too need tips on finger rolling, do you have the joint closest to the fingertip bent back? Do you move the wrist or only the finger?

Tough technique to explain...however here goes:
Ok barre the strings you want to play. The motion for the first note will be to raise your finger so that the b and g string are muted and the e string sounds. For the next note,Tilt your finger so that the b string sounds and the e string is muted. For the next note tilt finger a little more so the g string sounds and the b and e string are muted. Do the same thing in reverse to go up. Like I said before, the motion is very subtle and is a little tricky to master at first but it will become second nature in no time. There are two options besides using this technique:
#1) Move to another position where this problem will not be encountered
#2) Quit playing the guitar!!!! LOL :)
Have a good one!

It is a little easier to execute up around the 12th position or so; the strings mute easier up there due to the action being higher as you go up the neck. Raising your action a little bit might help sweeping in general also. Another point of sweeping is that you need to pick with authority, like you would when playing any other single note run. Tentative picking sounds like, well, tentative picking. Watch some video clips of sweeping and see if you can pick up some tips there.

You're soooooo right about the action thing you're mentioning...i used to do that - keeping my action just a tad higher than normal guitarists - and the muting thing just happened by itself...of course, because as you start to release the finger, the note stops ringing right under it...so no need to mute it with the left hand...the muting while you're sweeping should come from the left hand...

George Bellas has this technique mastered
Yeah, I myself have been working it at. I can do it but I need to get it cleaner. I've been practicing a sweep from Nevermore's "I, Voyager" song. I have to play it on my 7-string though. It's a fun arpeggio to play. Here it is:
eb|--14p11----------------------------------11--
Bb|-------11------------------------------11----
Gb|---------11--------------------------11------
Db|-----------13----------------------13--------
Ab|---------------------------------------------
Eb|---------------14p12p11--11h12h14------------
Bb|-----------------------14--------------------
I'm pretty sure that's it. I've been practicing that one alot. The only thing I can tell you that I'm doing is playing it slow and keeping it clean. Once I get good at doing that then I speed it up and repeat the whole process over.

I suggested a little while back that watching a video clip would help out. Here is a link to such a clip, Joe Stump doing his thing...

You will need Quicktime to play it
