I believe i have heard john petrucci talking about using these in his solos, but dont really know what he means. My friend says they are just little segments of scales that he speeds up in order to inject a little speed and spirit into his solos. Is this correct? regards

Scale Fragments are just scales broken up into smaller pieces. For example, let's say you're learning the run from "Home" on SFAM:

|--------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------
|----------------10-12-13-12-10------------------
|-11-12-14-12-11---------------14-12-11-12-14---

This would be the first "fragment" of that scale. You'd practice that 'til you feel you've got it up to speed then head to the next fragment:

|---------------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------------
|--------------------11-12-14-12-11----------------
|-10-12-13-10-12-13----------------13-12-10-12-13
|---------------------------------------------------

And so on :)
