You know how Eddie Van Halen did the elephant?

Well...

I've been working on a couple of ocean animal sounds to put into my surf bands songs. I'm really pushing for a more psychadelic direction and all...

I'd be happy to share them with you all... a couple need work. And I'd love for some feedback on how the sounds worked for you, or how we can improve them together.

All animal sounds require alot of reverb:

The whale- This is the only one I really learned from another guitar player. But I made a few modifications. You can hear a prime example in Ozzy Ozbourne's "No More Tears" when Zack Wylde does some bitchin' whales right before the solo.

the trick- stay clean tone and keep your volume knob on the pickup you are playing on all the way down. With NO VOLUME hit a note (I prefer 12th fret on A string) and as your slowly turning your volume up bend the note a half to a whole step and release to the original note as you quickly lower the volume again.

The dolphin- Use your fret hand and place it palm side about four inches from the bridge. Tremelo pick on the D and G strings (usually the E and A will be too low, and the B and high E will be too high) while the fret hand is moving up and down the strings about three to four inches at a time.

The seagull- This one needs some work, but I'm getting there. It is an alteration on the dolphin. Use the same hand position as with the dolphin but instead of tremelo picking with your picking hand use sharp jabs with the pointy side of your pick on the specific strings you wish to play. Not in a face motion, but in the same time it takes a seagull to "swuak". You'll get it.
If anybody has any cool effects for animal sounds post them hear. They're always a whole lot of fun to play.

Have fun.

Just in case people donīt know how Eddie did the "elephant":
1. Turn down the volume knob of the guitar to 0
2. Depress the wang bar
3. Hit the harmonic at the 5th fret, G-string, and right after it, the one at the 7th fret, B-String, so that they both ring together
4. While turning up the volume knob, let go of the bar slowly.

It takes a while to get it done without accidentially stopping the harmonics, and itīs tricky to synchronize all the necessary steps, but once you get it done, you get an "elephant" sound, even though some of my students commented that it sounds like a whale, too... =)

That actually happened when jamming on some Pantera riffs. I was headbanging, and hit the tuning pegs a bit hard with my forehead... ;)
Happy new year, friend
