Hi guys.

I never got around to ever learning this solo. Not sure why. I was working on it tonight, and wow. So far it's seeming a lot harder than it sounds. I've been getting most of it down, although there is one part I was hoping you guys could help me with.

The circled part is what I'm having trouble with. At a slow tempo (say 60bpm or something) I can hybrid it perfectly fine. But speeding it up to 130bpm or whatever the tab is, I cannot see myself ever hybrid picking it as fast as the song. Is there some kinda trick I could use? Right now it doesn't seem like I can just slowly work it up to speed, because as I said, I just can't see my fingers ever moving that fast (hybrid picking motion).

If anyone could help me through this part, that'd be great!

Thanks,
Brennan.

After thinking about it the best solution I can come up with is to mute the middle string and just strum it like a powerchord. ????

yep, just mute the middle string with your index and strum it.

I am not really familiar with this solo, although I have probably heard it 100 times, but do we know if the section in question is played by one guitar, or is it double-tracked?

It sounds like one guitar to me. Although it very well could be double-tracked. The way I am playing it now sounds almost 100% like the song does, so I guess I'll just play it like that.

Nonsense. The tab is wrong. Just play the upper section, forget the lower one.

I guess this tab is in Guitar Pro. Sometimes the guys who tab out songs with this software don't care about the accuracy of the tab, the first point of view for them is how it is gonna sound (because Guitar Pro can play the tabbed stuff, of course)

Maybe Kirk is using an octaver effect here, so that's why i think the guy tabbed the same lick an octave below also. But don't play it!!

If you're using guitar pro you will encouter this problem VEEERRY frequently, so that's why I prefer standard tab (e.g. Fretplay.com) I only use Guitar Pro if something's so fast I can't figure the rhythm out even having the standard tab, then i get the tab in Guitar Pro, make it play the section SLOWLY, then i get the rhythm, and then learn the lick/riff using the standard tab.

Well, guitar pro is a clever program, but often lies... That's why I often See Dream theater tabs with 6 or 7 guitar tracks - however Dream T has only 1 guitarist, petrucci. So then... figure it out which of the seven tracks are true...

Even though I agree that there are a lot of mistakes in many Guitar Pro and Powertab-transcriptions, keep in mind that in the studio, people do overdub a lot, so even if a band only has one guitarist, you might hear several guitar tracks ( check the amount of guitar overdubs on "The Attitude Song" or the whole "Passion & Warfare" album by Vai ).

I don't think he used an octave pedal because if you look carefully again it switches from an octave to a maj9th in one area. You could just play it with your pinky, it's not too much of a stretch (10-14), so I would just start playing it slow and work your way up. Mute the D string with your index finger and use your pinky finger to slide between the 12th and 14th frets on the G string. This is how I would play it. Have fun.

I once had the original tab book myself (then got bored of it and gave it away), and i remember that solo perfectly....as Bande said, don't play the octaves, just play the notes on the G string...

I played this song for a few years when it first came out. Its definitely octaves and doesn't sound like an effect. Mute the middle string and strum. Wes Montgomery would be proud....(I think!)

i have the tab book too and it isnt tabbed as octaves infact all the first 3 bars are single notes, but i have also seen it in a magazine played like your example (except the 3rd bar is strictly octaves, no maj6ths, that bit seems like a mistake in your tab) and i think it sounds much fuller with the extra notes.
there were actually quite a few differences in the tabs, the magazines version was much better than the books.

Check out a metallica concert where Kirk plays this song. If he plays that part than this is 'playable', if plays something else, or not exactly this, than he has used some effect.
