Hi all,

Just been playing for a couple of months now but one thing I'm having a problem with is the neck moving forward and back when I'm changing chords. I'm finding this is making the move between chords harder.

Is this just a matter of getting used to applying the right pressure with the thumb or am I doing something else wrong?

Thanks in avance.

Welcome to iBreathe first of all! :)

To your question:

Playing guitar is a pretty sensible thing.
There are no movements in everydays life that could compare to playing guitar and that could have been trained before you ever touch a guitar.
So everything has to be learned from scratch.

Do everything you do on the guitar as hard as necessary but as soft as possible!

Tread it like a girl.. don't shake her around too much. :D

Take care of your movements and don't hold the neck too tight.
The thumb and the other left hand fingers have to keep a balance when fretting the strings.
If you push with your thumb first, the neck will go forward.. other fingers first, the neck will go towards you.

Don't worry too much though .. it will all come with practice.
Relax and have fun.

One bad habbit I've seen beginers do is squeezing the neck once they've found their chord. Try keeping your wrist turned under a bit more with the thumb pressed in the back middle of the neck.

With time you'll find your own style of attaching the neck but, for now it appears you need an exajurated form like I've described to develope your fingering technic.

Yeah, you only need anough pressure to sound the chord/notes. Anything more than that will just be a waste of energy.
