View Full Version : Unwanted harmonics

When practicing sweeping and really looking out for unwanted noice, I've found that I have problems doing things like this

E-----------------12--14----------------------------
B--------------13-----------------------------------
G-----------12--------------------------------------

Without the 12 on the G string becoming a harmonic and thereby making unwanted noice. The only solutions I've come up with so far is right hand muting or removing my finger from the string in some other way.

Anyone else have this problem?

when you fret the 13 with (id assume) your middle finger, let the tip of your middle finger overlap the B string so that its touching the G string. that should mute the string without the harmonic since the muting is done at the 13th fret.

there's probably other ways to do it, but that's what i'd do.

Im totally with <KF> there.

And i even think that this is the best way to mute stuff like that.

A good left hand muting technique, where the fretting finger touches (and mutes) the adjacent strings is one of the few keys to clean playing all the time.

EDIT: Playing that way, with the fingers rather flat than pointy on the fretboard, can feel quite unusual at first, but is well worth the additional amount of practice. It definately will pay off!

It works, but damn, it's hard. :P

Feels so unnatural now that I'm used to using just fingertip.

Thanks alot though. :)
