hi guys

I have Frank Gambale's technique book one and two. in his two books he provides diagrams of scales all along the neck. when he introduces dorian scales he writes that the whole diagram of d dorian should be learnt by heart plus dorian should be learnt in other keys as well.

When you play C major in first position in a box shape and if you want to move to the key of F you just move whole C major pattern a perfect fourth up the neck and you are in the key of F.

My question is : what areas of your playing will be better if you learn by heart scales in many keys along the whole fretboard?

Don't get me wrong. I don't doubt mr. Gamale's method. He is excellent player and I strongly believe that his method is useful. I only would like to understand before I start to learn in what ways learning by heart scales all over the fretboard in different keys will be of benefit to me.
any comments will be highly appreciated

regards
I just need some intense practice, Im living at a youth shelter right now, and I have nothing to do everyday, and I dont really feel like learning other peoples songs (unless thats what you suggest) I just need something that will intensely improve my classical skills, or just nylon guitar skills. If you can suggest anything, that would be amazing!!!

Hi guys,
maybe its because i can not sleep right now :) but its not the only time i asked myself this......

Is there something special about the sound of the crystal plant album by joe satriani. For me it sounds quite differnt from the others. The whole album has this dreamy "happy" sound (not ionian like e.g. sweet chile o mine) it has a different feeling wich i can't really explain.

Lets listen to some examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xjN_...eature=related
(Up in the sky the part from 1:12)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-FuK...eature=related
(the begining section)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QDWG6H0Ve8
(when the lead guitar begins -but the first "solo" sounds like pentatonic)

I think the most of you will know this album.
Can you explain theoreticaly whats happening there?

I think that the song titles also give this impression. "lights od heaven"
"up in the sky".....everything seems so far away....like joes melodies....when i close my eyes i have the feeling that i'm flying through clouds at night (okay now you'll all thik this guys crazy :) )

I hope you cab relate to my impressions and feelings about this songs.
at the and i have to say sorry for my bad english :)

Hey everyone...I'm having trouble understanding minor scales In my class, we went over relative, harmonic, and melodic minors, but I'm having trouble identifying them and interpret them on the staves. Here's what I have in my notes:

Relative minor:- 6th note in major scale.
Relative major: Find 6th note in major scale then 3rd up from that.

Natural minor: Start on submediant on relative major.

Harmonic minor: Raise 7th note of natural minor but still use natural minor key signatures.

Melodic minor: Take natural minor, raise 6th & 7th note by a half-step for ascending; descending 6th & 7th note lowered by half-step.

I have some scribbles of Parallel major, but I don't really recall what it was about. I guess I need to take better notes in class.

My problem is putting this information in the staff. I have to write ascending and descending natural minor scales for one of my assignments. The first one is B natural minor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

****EDIT****Looked up some information online. Question: In order to find a natural minor scale, all you have to do is fine the 6th of that major scale and insert the sharps or flats of that major scale. For example; If I'm asked to notate the F# natural minor scale (A Major) it would look like: F# G# A B C# D E F#

Do you think that when guys like mclaughlin improvise, they play their own lines they probably create on the basis on scale fingerings they know. Well, they probably don't think: well, here is root for dorian so I am going to play this shape here...- while playing there's no time for it so probably everything they play in relation to patterns and fingerings is learnt by heart earlier. What do you think?

Recently, within the past year, I've noticed that my left breast muscle has become a bit larger than my right, and I am right handed. It's not glaringly obvious, though it is certainly noticeable. And though I cannot pin point when this strange development happened, I know I wasn't always like this. I think it may have been happening since I've been playing guitar (the past three years [or I may be way off entirely, and it may be a condition of some sort, although I hope not] I went to my doctor about it, and he didn't seem too concerned about it, as he didn't even want to have me take off my shirt.

To be clear, it's not a lump or anything, but my left breast muscle (the whole thing) is considerably larger than the right.

So I am curious if any right handed guitar players have experienced this before?

So, for as long as I could remember, I've been able to identify, in isolation, any type of pitch and give the key of it. It can extend from such things as a piano, guitar, to random noises (sirens, doorbells, etc.). Every quiz that I take on the internet comes up as 100%, etc. If you need to know the key of a song, I can tell you (at least as far as my general chord knowledge goes, but even then, I can give you a root). I'm self-taught in piano and didn't take my first theory class until I was a freshman in college (a couple of years ago). It was a great class and very informative and I got a nice lesson in relative pitch, although I pretty much already knew it, despite not being taught, since I already knew the individual pitches. Though it was at this class that I discovered something very interesting...

Despite how I've always felt I've had perfect pitch throughout the years, whenever it came to melodic dictation, it wasn't as much of a breeze as I expected. Granted, I still finished before everyone else, but the notes didn't pop out to me like they would in isolation and sometimes I could just be flat out lost, but pretty much only due to the speed. If the teacher slowed it down, I could nail it, but I did have my problems. On the other hand, when I listen to actual music, for the most part, trying to figure out the pitch of, say, the melody that is being sung or even a solo... I'm usually lost.

And it's precisely that why I post all this. After not really paying much attention to theory and the like since that class, I'm now sort of into it again. Mostly because my goal is this: I want to be able to hear a song and right after hearing it, go to the piano and play it, melody/riff and all perfectly, or at least close to it. I know this sounds a bit unrealistic, but if I have perfect pitch, shouldn't I have the ability to do this? Or does my inability mean that I don't have it? Or is acquiring such a goal as mine more of a non-perfect pitch issue?

I suppose I would be really interested to know why 1. I have trouble identifying notes when NOT in isolation and 2. what could be done to remedy this.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

So far I found this one, but I'm not sure if it's good for what I'll be recording (typically metal, or very assertive distortion)

So for the musicians here that record, can you give me any advice or links to microphones that would be a good investment?

Also I'm not sure if I put this in the right place, please move it wherever it seems fit. Thanks.
