Smooth Tone?

So I have a marshall JCM 800 combo and a Boss ME-50. Every time i dial in a tone, it is very sharp or gritty. I want a smooth tone. How does one achieve a smooth distorted tone? What eq or effects are needed? Thanks guys

Theres no gear talk allowed here, its a 'music' site, not 'music equipment' site

but since i'm here heres some things to try: use the neck pickup, roll your guitars tone knob down, turn the amps presence and/or treble knob down, turn the gain down.

Ditto as above, but there is an interesting tone you can get if you crank your gain but turn down your tone knob and the amp's treble.
