Cool thread. I didn't know there'd be so many people thinking deeply about afrocuban on this forum.
For me, its taken years listening to Salsa to wrap my head around what the bass and percussion are doing, and its only been in the last two years that I feel I'm getting it. I understand intellectually, feel it in my bones, now its a matter of arranging in it, and that will take many years to master.
Latin Wedding Band
Practicing to a clave has been the best for me. It opens up the possibilities of melodies that include up-beats instead of all down-beats. The best solos in my opinion have that change rhythm. Even playing the same melody twice but with different rhythms can be genius. The world of clave has opened up so many doors for me. I cannot recommend it enough.
