    Question picking motion

    Hi everybody

I have read a couple of times that the right hand picking motion should be like "turning a key in a lock" or "turning a doorknob".

    Is this correct?

Please could someone give some additional info on this method?
How many people have tried it and had success?

Are there any limitations to picking like this?

Any thoughts or ideas would help...

    Thanks

The turning the key is closest (I guess) if the key was pointing down the same way as the guitars neck. Hence the rotation of the wrist (while turning the key) is the rotation you would use to move a pick up and down.
That is to say I think that's what is ment.

Most 'shredders' use exclusive wrist picking motion; only the wrist moves in the motion. The forearm and fingers are kept still. The hand should be level with the rest of the forearm, and should move sidewards over and back on one axis.

Well, I'm sorta a shredder (i can play fast and melodic but i usually do it in the form of a guitar solo not and entire shred song) I use my arm, I can Relax way more when i use my arm and can gain speeds boosts even if i need to.
    (enter catch phrase here)

I don't limit myself to any one style of motion. I just let my hand do what it wants to do. sometimes i pick with just my wrist, sometimes i pick from my elbow, sometimes i slant my pic, sometimes i pick flatly, whatever feels right at that particular moment.

    Thumbs up

in my opinion it doesn't matter which style u pick. people can say stuff like picking with the thumb is better because less movement is better, but when it comes down to it, it's always gonna work out for the best if u choose to do what feels natural to u. whatever picking motion works for u, stick with it, work hard and don't give up on it and your persistence will pay off

Hey J, what your post brings to mind is bending. WHen you bend you should get your whole wrist in there, like opening a door, or the shower. The motion you described above doesnt make that much sense to me when referring to picking.

    hope this helps,

Hey Koala, thanks man, in terms of the left hand I can understand a wrist rotation being used for bending. Thats cool.

Now with the right hand for picking, imagine tracing tiny "U" shapes above the string with the pick... This would give you the motion created by this rotation of the wrist.
(Thats the best way I can think of describing it)

Any more ideas, pro's and con's etc?
