    2.Orion (Metallica)
    3.Wayfaerer (In Flames)
4.To Live Is To Die (Metallica)
    5.Pallar Anders Visa (In Flames)

In Flames - Man Made God
In Flames - Dialogue with the Stars
Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
Metallica - To Live is to Die
    Arch Enemy - Stigmata

I wouldn't consider Pallar Anders Visa for this cuz it's totally acoustic and strings, so it's not In Flames's most metal moment.

Interesting topic, but there's a bunch of better stuff out there than Metallica. Here's my five favorites (in no ranked order - they're all great):

1: Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony - Speed Metal Symphony (everyone should at least have heard of these guys, after the discussions about Becker & Friedman, the whole album is excellent)
2: Dream Theater - Awake - Erotomania (I would have put Overture from SDOIT, or Overture 1928 from Metropolis Pt. II, but those just don't mean as much on their own as they do along with the rest of their respective albums, so I also recommend getting
    those two albums in addition)
3: Mr. Big - Street Lethal - Y.R.O. (Everyone should buy five of this album - one for the home stereo, one for the Discman, one for the car, and the other two as backups - after Vandenberg's constant mention of PG and the Moto Perpetuo album there should be no reason not to buy it)
4: Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare - Erotic Nightmares (Everyone's heard this one. I hope.)
5: Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen I - Eruption (Had you scared, didn't I?)

There's a ton of other good stuff - I'm particularly fond of the Liquid Tension Experiment albums and I also like anything by Vai, Satch, Eric Johnson, PG, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, etc...but that should get you 'retards' started. Metallica can't touch them.

I don't know if it qualifies as metal in most people's book, but I still think both CDs by Bozzio, Levins, & Stevens are fantastic. Very heavy, but maybe not metal. Jennifer batten probably doesn't quite qualify, either, but there are some heavy things on her debut record that are out of this world.

Yngwie did a tune with Alcatrazz that smoked, and early Racer-X was just SOOOOOO indulgently cool.

But what is the coolest instrumental metal since 2000?

I thought the thread was instrumental specific? I'm not sure about some of those others but I know Dream Theater - Glass Prison has lyrics.

    In no particular order:

Death - Voice of the Soul
    Cacophony - Concerto
    Dream Theater - Overture 1928
Paul Gilbert - Metal Dog (or Technical Difficulties, they've got some of the same licks.)
    Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony

Goodness what the hell was I thinking. I think I meant Stream of Conciousness.

I was just making sure, because if they were allowed to have words I was about to add The Odyssey by Symphony X. To me, that's a masterpiece.

Ummm...these are Racer X, not Mr. Big songs.

    1. Icarus' Dream Suite -Yngwie
    2. Autumn Lords -Tony Macalpine
    3. Orion -Metallica(apparently I'm a "retard," but I think that this is a good piece of music, and much more impressive than Eruption from a compositional standpoint)
    4. Flying in a Blue Dream -Satriani
    5. Pieces of a Picture -Vinnie Moore

The term "metal" is kind of limiting. I wanted to bring up "Grey Pianos Flying" by Shawn Lane, but it just didn't seem very metal to me.

    Dammit, you're right.
I guess I couldn't decide between Racer X and Mr. Big's Lean Into It, but I guess I screwed them both up. Sorry for the confusion guys.

    Rock On,
