Bad popmusic!

Hi guys!
It's a topic that I often think about and I'm excited of your answers: It's a subjective view but in my opinion popmusic is getting worse every year. I'm coming from Germany and when I'm listening to the "normal radio" 95% of the actual music is just rubbish in my eyes, boring, full of simple melodies and song-texts. I don't see anything that I would call creativity or that even touches my mind. And as a rock- and guitar-fan I really miss the guitar. When I listen to songs from the 80's I always think that they are much better than the music from today. It's a general impression I get, of course there might be some exceptions but now I want to know from you if you've got the same impression of the "pop-music" in your country or if I'm the only one who is nearly ashamed of the music-culture in his country...

I think Pop Music, just like every genre has its highs and lows. I'm not a big fan of Britney Spears and similar artists, but I won't deny the talent of some Pop singers. In Australia, we have Australian Idol and that has produced alot of good singers. Although you may not usually download songs I would take it upon yourself to try download a few of these songs(Or anyone!)

Delta Goodrem- Innocent Eyes
Delta Goodrem- Lost Without You

There is denying the vocal talent of these two artists- they are much less "Commercialised" then the likes of Britney Spears.

I can reccommend a few more artists/songs if you like. Everyone should try download the songs, and if you like it buy the Album- My sister has Delta's Album, and she loves it and I dont mind it at all, and Cosima is releasing an album really soon. Her vocal range is really, really good.

I tend to agree and disagree. It is true that most pop music today is terrible and is more of a product to be sold than an art form. For me personally I give more credit to musicians who either play an instrument or write some of their material, (and I don't mean just for the video!) I find it hard to take the ones who can barely carry a tune in a bucket, but who have bodies to distract from the bad music. And yes, I KNOW music is a business and it needs to make money and that sex sells. Doesn't stop me from being slightly disgusted by some of the music I hear over the airwaves or videos I see on T.V. That being said however, there are exceptions to the rule, there are impressive voices recording bad songs, or decent songs recorded by unskilled singers, but when it comes to my own definition of music, I have to listen to something that has meaning, or at least is composed well, maybe has really cool harmonies or just a great bassline, or something.Something that makes the song worth listening to, and if I actually buy the album, it's gonna be something I enjoy as well as appreciate I'm not cool with the packages, especialy when they end up making more money merchandising for little girls than from actually performing. I walked past a pile of "Hillary Duff Stuff" in a department store the other day. Man! Guess it's fine if you're a 6 year old girl. It's all about money. Makes me mad. I know, in an ideal world we coud leave music as a higher art form, but in our world money comes first. Kinda crappy.

NOONE IS FORCED TO CONSUME MUSIC HE DOES NOT LIKE.
you don't have to listen to it and you don't have to buy it.

if you hate a track switch it of - leave the place.

if everybody who thinks "well i don't really like the song but i don't care and listen to it" would make his mind up and take action, those "placebo-like" clonebands wouldn't sell close to what they sell now.

thing is: people don't care! and the music looses its value.

be one who cares what he is listening to and act like that.

as i am from germany also i have to agree with the threadstarter !! i have stopped listening to the radio because it sucks !! maybe some of you have heard the name "dieter bohlen" ... he produces almost every new german song and they all sound the same . and those who are not produced by them also can´t write interesting song....
bring the 80´s back alive !!! even the pop-music back then was better than most of the new "rock"-stuff ...

Call me strange, but I love pop music. I can only take so much of any particular form before I need a change, but I can't really name one particular style that I dislike. Can;t say the same for specific artists, though (hahaha!!!).

Hey, did Austrailian Idol ever feature an American singer named Robin Johnson?

what do people expect from pop-music?

i mean, the style explains itself, popular music. trendy, up to date, hip.
reflecting the lifestyle of the youth.
it's easy to consume, just like a hamburger.
what's hip today can be crap tomorrow. maybe the day after tomorrow.
it's a cheap throw-away article and is not expected to last long, just like a plastic fork - useful at the moment but of none further importance.

pop is not there to save your life and does not take the responsability to please your most valuable emotions and inner feelings.
pop is like a irresponsable kid that says don't expect me to be meaningful.

so what do you expect, and what are you afraid of? if you don't like that kid - leave it alone!

if you want to find good company, go out there and find it diggin deeper in other styles.

some of my thoughts regarding "bad" music:


!!!YOU`RE GUILTY!!! why do you waste your time waiting for messiah MTV to bring salvation?


1) there has ALWAYS been a lot of crap around, through all ages and decades.
marketing ideas such as clonebands etc. are NOT a invitation of the new millenium.

2) "life turns in circles" and so society does. there have always been times with high creative output and such with less.

3) take it as it is. it´s entertainment NOT art.


wanna change something?

1) every generation got its heroes. so go out and SPREAD THE WORD!!!
if the music of your most loving artist is really from his/her heart, it will touch many more than just yours.

2) GO OUT and start searching for GOLD. IT`S ON THE STREETS. and I`ve found a lot of it.

and finally:

I have no problem with pop, in the sense that i can take it for a while. I tend to stick to the "try to appreciate everything policy". Not always very easy. Sometime i cry when watching my weekly 10-15m MTV dose! Some of the music is so pathetic.

Sometimes when i go out with my friends and have to spend a lot of time listening to stuff i don't like (so we don't put strange names) i end up getting home at 2/3 am and have to put the music i usually listen too, coz i end up craving for it and appreciating more.

Pop is in my opinion music for the public and lite listening. I know very few people who actually sit down to LISTEN to music (like others do to read). On the other hand there are others whose relation with music is very intense and emotional to the point where they sit and stop purely to listen to it.

I remember "Great Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd, we're all in the office and I put up pink floyd for my mates. Suddenly "Great Gig" comes up ... and you realise that everyone in the office is staring in awe and only listening to Claire Torry 's improvisation through those notes.... WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! I go through the same instensity each time i listen to her, each time like the first time!

no matter how good pop is (or isn't!), i don't think it can ever reach such a level. It's simply not radio/MTV or money friendly.

one more thing:

i have zero tolerance concerning music. either i like it or not. if i don't like it i don't listen to it.
but there is no reason for me to argue with those people and i don't waste time getting angry about whats on radio and television.
i don't like fish. if i go to a restaurant i eat something else without looking at fisheaters like they're not worth living.
they don't even get on my nerves!

everybody gives music a different value - if someone doesn't care that he is listening to crap pop then that is his/her problem.
the one selling him/her that crap pop is a lucky bustard, but i don't envy him at all.

I totally agree with phantom.As any other thing we have the choice of consuming the music or not.And also not care what the nieghbour is buying or doing.When a large amount of people like same thing that means there is some fantasy about that particular thing!

Music's first property is providing entertainment.Which i think pop music is a rich and famous source.Pop music uses a large variety of instruments with energetic melody.While on the other hand we are taking about rock,metal etc which uses guitar as lead.Therefore it is more liked by guitar players and those who can listen to guitar with a taste.

I think people who say they don't like pop music because it is not original or creative should stop saying that because it's not that thing and it can't be.Instead they should find someother reason.

In the end i would like to say that practices are to be comented so if you have some negetive opinion get it out.But try not to say someone else stupid for doing something.(specially in this case)

Pop may be the leader at present.But after ten years who knows rock would cover the sky AGAIN
