connecting chords
Hey guys my name is Sarit and I'm new here ![]() I try to work on connecting chords in some exercises from a harmony book I have so I'll be glad if someone can tell me if I have any mistakes? If it's take too long to check it then will be ok to tell me only about the first version of each I have 2 write 2 versions.. Here is the scan http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2dnoki&s=4 |

if you could be a bit clearer about what the exercise is supposed to be expressing?

Ok.
Well, If I understand the exercise correctly. You are using the root notes in the bass clef and trying to harmonize those chords? 1a. First bass note is an E. and you have C# G B in the trebble clef(above) You also have I VI IV I in there so I'm assuming those are the chords we need to see. In which case. 4 sharps indicating Emajor Chord 1 (I) will be E G# B D# (Emajor7) ... You have E C# G# B = Emajor6 which may or may not be what the book is asking you to write.. I'm thinking Emaj or Emaj7 is what they want though. Chord 6 (VI) you have C# in the bass. E G# and C# in treble. This seems fine. C#minor triad. Chord 4 (IV) A in the bass. A C# E in the treble. A major triad. then Chord 1 again. but this time you have G# B and E in the treble. Which is just a plain Emajor triad. So you seem to be on the right track. At a glance they seem mostly to be representing the correct chords. Does this help?

If this is for college, there are a few things your professor will get you on. If you are supposed to be writing standard four-part harmony, you are best to drop the tenor voice to bass clef.
Other than that, you could keep common tones more. Like in your 2nd and 3rd chord, the vi-IV chords. You could keep the E (t) and C# (s) note as common tones. It is hard to see but the next chord, the V chord looks like it has a G on top, it should be an F#. I think that sometimes you have too much space between your Bass And Tenor voice as in ex2, the V chord in the second measure. You have to remember, somebody is supposed to be singing so you want as little motion in the middle voices as possible. |

Thanks Jazzmick and Chris
![]() I'm self thought it's pretty hard but I don't give up ![]() Here is what I have in the book http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2zszioz&s=4 I guess that I have to write 4 part harmony- because that the bass all the notes in root position that tells me that it's for 4 parts harmony? I changed what I did for 4 parts http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2uhtuli&s=4 there are times when I can't avoid the distance between the bass and tenor I don't have a good control on the sopran line like if I want to write a sopran line just "like that" somewhere in the middle I'll get problems and can't match well the chords... it's like I have to write in reverse the sopran line. Btw I don't think I have to use yet the 7 chord like E,G#,B,D#... |

Yes, that's what it says in the instructions: they want the sop, alto and tenor voices added so we are talking four-part harmony. It also says triads, so they don't want 7th chords although the V7 chord would not be uncommon for the period.
Your writing is looking better, you are doing a nice job keeping common tones. There are other things to look for, like resolving the leading tone down (in the first example, making your D notes resolve to a C# note, etc.) If you record all the lines separately, you'll sound like Brian May. |
