Double Stops!

I have started using Double-Stops in my Improvisation, can anyone give some advice on how to use them well, I mainly play two notes on the same fret on adjacent strings, but I would like to explore other possibilites too!!!

Double stops are, very cool ! Aside from 4ths, 3rds and 6ths work quite well, as do 5ths sometimes. They can remain 'diatonic' with the harmony or, add tension.
........this'll only lead to stronger things, you know -

-best,
Mike

Try doing doublestops on non-adjacent strings.

Get a grip on your intervals. Work on harmonic (playing both notes at the same time) intervals in all keys (Major, and all 3 minor scales too) that'll give you a good source of material where to start.

You can also try inverted 3rds and inverted 5ths.

Did anyone of you read Steve Vai's old guitar lessons?

Well I recommend you should read the one called double stops. It is really helpful!
It says you should experiment with double stops and not just learn what interval fits where.
You may even try "triple stops". So Go to www.stevevai.com and search for the doublestop lesson!

The link you gave, was to his Unoffical site, which didn't have the lesson, but I did find it on his Offical Site, so thanks for mentioning it!

Oh, sh*t. I always forget everything. Hey, sorry.

Anyway, it's a miracle I don't forget how to fret a string

How are they Unique?

Will someone explain why double stops are given a name that seems to set them apart from any other chord (I assume they obey the same general guidance that any harmonization does, whatever that might be)?

Asked another way (and maybe this is a totally different question), how would you distinguish between say a 'power chord' and a 'double stop'?

"power" chords are there to add power, theye are usually found on the bass notes and are generally played for rhythmic purposes.

Double stops are more often than not, used during soloing.

Theoretically i believe they are identical -- nothing but diads or dyads (spelling?).

or not?

You can just look at double stops as a double-voiced harmonized melody, it makes it a lot easier. It should suggest an unambiguos interval in the underlying harmony. Check out wes montogmery and kenny burrel for some killer doublestops. If I have time later I'll make a few tab/standard notation examples.

Thanks guys, that all makes sense. I have a lot of Wes, but only a few Kenny Burrell tunes...maybe you could recommend a few where it's easiest to hear their technique.

If you have a lot of Wes, transcribing that should be enough.
