Can you guys list good jazz or blues pianists or even songs. I want to open up my ears to blues piano solos and jazz etc so I can build my technique and learn to play better.

Someone mentioned Art Tatum already, I just wanted to add a "+1" to that ( and to all the others as well ). I have some compilations of Tatumīs music, and he is indeed amazing... what a great player. He was a heavy influence for Shawn Lane, by the way...

There's a young guy over here (UK) who, if you know of Jools Holland, plays Boogie-Woogie style better!! (IMO)
His names Ben Waters and well worth checking out!!

thanks guys for the help. I'm getting a lot better I think by listening to these guys. I've also been wathcing things on mag-rack, they taught me some Ray Charles licks which was so helpful. I'm also glad that there is finally a piano section. We made a difference! lol
Bob, I guess I shouldn't be using Limewire anyway but I couldn't find those ragtime guys on there and I absolutely love ragtime and swing, stride piano etc. I guess I'll have to......ugh.......buy their stuff lol. Last edited by SostenutO; 04-01-2005 at 03:31 AM. |

Sun Ra is more known as a jazz composer, but he's also a great jazz pianist. Besides the Arkestra things, I have one of his solo piano albums, 'Monorails and Satellites.'
